http://stolen-bikes.co.uk/ was mentioned on a BBC1 programme that discussed bike theft in the West Midlands. Apparently the site was created by someone who had his own bike nicked.

If watching ebay I'd suggest you browse the bikes section then sort by distance, nearest first. The tealeaf may not put the brand or model, just some nondescript term like "racing bike". They may also not list it for a few weeks in the hope that you've given up by then.

Is there a local 'for sale' group on Facebook where you are? If so then keep an eye on that too.

And buy a baseball bat.

Please ensure the first place is the local police station. Take a picture if you have one and your serial numbers. Get them to record the crime and then the details should be saved and searchable locally by the police.

Secondly, if not done so already, go to immobilise.com. It's a free site and you can sign up, add pictures descriptions and serial number details and then mark it as stolen. Immobilise is accessible to all UK police forces via theNMPR ( the property Police national computer). If anyone is stopped on your bike and serial numbers checked it will flag up times dates and contact details of you and when it was stolen.

Further to that, the police won't conduct these enquiries ( I wouldn't explain why in this post as it would be superfluous to what you've asked) but check gumtree ebay loot etc and set up alerts for bikes up for sale. Also check local bike shops and repair shops.

Other than that hope your bike is recovered by the police. Either stopping someone on it or being found during a house search.

And there may be a local one for your area - there's definitely one for London, and I run one for Bristol. Get a distinctive description of the bike up on as many forums as you can (like this one for example!), and leave your contact details (set up a dedicated Gmail address if you prefer) so people can get in touch with potential sightings.

Immobilise is the official police database - get it up on there if you haven't already. You might need a record of your serial number. If you don't have that, the shop where you bought it might be able to help.
