Gearcable stuck shifter?

Out on a ride and the cable snapped, went home and thought that I would fix it quickly instead I managed to destroy the whole thing?

I wish I just sat down and searched about it because apparently it is possible to unscrew and take out a broken cable. I threaded a new cable when the old one was stuck and this is the result...

I have a really small pick but it isn't moving at all...

I had a similar problem where the bulbous end of the cable had slipped out of the slot for it in the shifter. It came out with a bit of fiddling, Pulling the brake lever into the "On" position helped, for some reason. It also made it easier to access the problem when I unscrewed the cover under the bottom of the shifter housing. I think there's only one place you can unscrew so you can't go too far wrong, though it looks like you may already have done that. Good luck - perseverance will see you through.
