Velothon Wales closed road sportive + UCI road race coming to Cardiff in 2015

Pre-register for a place on 14 June 2015 and you can get 20% off with road.cc

There's a lot of sportives you can do these days, but this one looks like it'll be popular: Velothon Wales offers you a 120km route through South Wales on closed roads, and when you're done you get to hang around and watch the Pros have a go in a UCI-sanctioned road race on the same roads. The date of the event is set fo 14 June 2015.

There are a number of Velothon events around the world organised into a series, the Velothon Majors. There are currently rides in Vienna, Berlin and Philadelphia with the Berlin Velothon attracting 14,000 participants and some big names too: Marcel Kittel and Andre Greipel have both won the Pro race in Germany.

The Welsh event has a capacity of 10,000 for the sportive; there's a shorter and less hilly 50km loop or the signature 120km ride that takes in Caerphilly Mountain and the Tumble, where there will be a timed King of the Mountains challenge. The Pros will do essentialy the same course but with multiple laps of a Tumble/Caerphilly loop before returning to Cardiff.

Velothon Wales’ Race Director Roland Hofer said: “We know there is a huge appetite for world-class cycling events, particularly in light of Ride London where over 80,000 people entered the ballot for the 2014 event.

“Having worked as Race Director for Velothon Berlin since 2009, I am hugely excited to be part of the team that will be delivering Velothon Wales. Each year Velothon Berlin attracts a stellar elite field which, combined with thousands of participants taking on the exact same route, creates a truly memorable day of cycling. We are looking forward to Velothon Wales emulating its success in every respect.”

Fancy it? It's £55 to enter (£40 for the 55km route), but if you're quick you can get 20% off that. There's currently a pre-registration window open on the Velothon Wales website: you can stick in your details and you'll be notified when booking is live. Use the code ROADCC to bag yourself a big discount. There are 2,000 discounted entries available which will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis when priority booking is open.

Again you keep suggesting that it is likely or possible, that a responsible elected official would deliberately post something so offensive.
Its not just that you could be completely wrong, you are completely wrong to keep suggesting such nonsense.
It is said that having a new baby frazzles the mind, well now I believe it!

Why are you suggesting it isn't possible for elected officials to indulge in bad behaviour?

You mean like David Cameron and Boris Johnson trashing restaurants with the Bullingdon Club?

David Cameron abandoning his kid in the pub?

Boris Johnson cheating on his missus?

Gideon Osbourne knocking about with prostitutes in a gaff with a bang load of cocaine?

Yep, politicians, always so trustable and purer than pure that mob...

It's ok Tom, you can come out now, we know you're in there.

So tell me, what brought you to this thread? Are you a cyclist? Or did you just search for press for velothon? You're spending a lot of time and effort just to shout me down.

And if you really think that politicians are that full of integrity, it's you with the frazzled mind...

Not time and effort to shout you down, but to correct your constant assertion that the person posting the offensive remark is likely to be a council's cabinet member.
And now your assumptions continue as you suggest that my name is Tom, that I may not even be a cyclist and have never seen this site before.
For your information, my name is not Tom, I ride several hundred miles a week and just because I have chosen not to post here before, that does not mean that I have not been a regular reader of this website.
To keep making ridiculous assumptions about people shows how stupid you are.

No I shouldn't. I'm permitted an opinion just like you are. I also say I could be completely wrong, thereby acknowledging the possibility of a mere coincidence. Anyway, how do you know I'm wrong?

As for garbled, I just noticed that - serves me right for typing on a phone in between baby duties, I guess.

Local politics alert.....

On a more serious note, I can't see an elevation profile for the route, is there one?

Tom Williams - that was the loudest first post I've seen on here for ages! Welcome to the road.cc forum of rational, logical and sometimes biased debates and discussions!

Closed road or not, that's a fairly uninspiring route, The Tumble again really? it is a decent hill, if fairly dull. but there are Two other mini Alp climbs in very close proximity.

Caerphilly Mountain is while steep is a bit of a Meh hill.

the loop out and around via Usk is rolling land, but not roads most would chose as fantastic biking roads closed roads or not.

Big open roads from Pontypool to Caerphilly if your in a fast group could be a hoot, if not well.

There is some fantastic riding on or off road around there, and they have managed to cleverly avoid almost all of it.

I'm guessing that when they plan these things there are many more priorities and considerations than the prettiness of the route. Which roads are practical to close, what alternative detours are available, are the roads accessible and appropriate for spectators and support infrastructure, availability of medical assistance, elf & safety of the mass participation riders, technical difficulty of the descents, etc, etc.

If that is the Caerphilly council’s cabinet member for transportation Tom Williams, then I'll take a few wild guesses:

1. You were involved in devising the route
2. You're having a go at Roger Merriman for pointing out that there are better roads in the area (Joeinpoole is quite correct about the different challenges posed by an event like this when compared to simply going for a ride, but that's a different discussion)
3. With reactions like that, I'm glad you don't work for my local authority

I may of course be completely wrong. Please enlighten us.

The appalling comment made by a 'Tom Williams' is one thing. But your attempt to infer it could be made by Caerphilly council's cabinet member for highways and transportation is nothing short of a disgrace.
To even attempt to suggest that such a responsible person, would go to the trouble to sign up here, then post such a vile, incomprehensible comment under their own name is simply absurd.
Quite frankly, your attempt to link such a comment to a local authority member who happens to have that name, is disgraceful and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Tom Williams signed up just to make ranty obscene comment using entirely inappropriate language, and we can't even be sure who to. Such strong feelings don't generally come from people without personal interests or indeed involvement. I simply noted that someone with that same name appears to hold a role that could, just maybe, have had such involvement. It's nothing to be ashamed of to call someone out on such foul shouty language on a site that is by no means adults only. Whether it's THAT Tom Williams or not, he could have posted an intelligent criticism and engaged in debate, but no. As for posting under his own name, stick around here and check out how many people the stupidest things under their own names, so no, it wouldn't be that surprising.

As for yourself, you signed up just to say that?

Are you for real notfastenough?

You said and I quote: "I'm glad you don't work for my local authority". You have clearly suggested that the unintelligible, obscene comment could have been made by Caerphilly council's cabinet member for highways.

No doubt if it was made by a 'David Cameron' you would think it was the Prime Minister himself signing up to make such a vile remark!

Now, in your garbled explanation, you continue to suggest that such a responsible, elected representative is likely to have made such a vile comment because you think they have been personally involved in the planning of this event
Your continued inferences are not only disgraceful they are downright stupid. Indeed, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm not a 'sportive' type and find the idea of paying to ride on a public road with cars about weird, but this? Closed roads? Welsh hills? Sold. Me and the missus. Saves driving all the way to Loch Ness for that one...
