Grimsby schoolgirl killed by 'drunk' driver as she cycled after school

Police appeal for info; BMW driver arrested on suspicion of drink driving

An 11 year old schoolgirl was killed by an allegedly drunk driver in the middle of Friday afternoon in Grimsby.

Jodie Rodgers was hit on Park Street by a blue BMW 320ci at around 4.25pm, and was airlifted to Diana Princess of Wales Hospital with serious injuries from the collision.

She later died in Leeds General Infirmary.

A 35 year old Grimsby man has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, and released on bail.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, or anyone who saw either Jodie or the car prior to the incident, are asked to call 101, quoting log number 320 of September 25.

On the same day, a 48-year-old man required treatment at hospital after being knocked from his bicycle by a passing vehicle.

The incident happened at 11.45am on Thursday September 17 at the junction of Main Street and Vicarage Close in Watton near Driffield.

The cyclist was overtaken by a white Ford Transit van which is alleged to have caught him as it passed, knocking him off his cycle. The van continued on without stopping, possibly unaware of the incident.

The cyclist suffered bruising and went to the Driffield Minor Injury centre for treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to ring 101 referring to log 310 of September 17.

The two incidents are not thought to be related.

"Tourdelound mentions that he will probably be back on the roads again in the near future.
I think the report mentioned that he was released on bail.
When you're on bail for such an offence, can your license be withdrawn before any conviction ?
Of course, if his hands were cut off, he might not drive for a while (Islam doesn't have everything wrong !)."

Much as I agree with you sentiments I don't relish having to support this scrote for the rest of his life because he has been disabled & traumatised. Instead he should be put to work cleaning up cycle lanes & tracks and also forced to attend the childs funeral so that he can see the trauma he has caused the family,

then have his b*lls surgically removed.

I had an Audi cut me up on Belgrave Square before turning left in front of me last week - indicators not working. He was so close i could knock on his car as he drove past but he was so distracted he carried on driving. Next time I'll hit/kick the car a little harder - that might wake him up!

Condolences to the girl's family. Sadly our inadequate justice system will ensure that it won't be long before the driver is allowed to have a crack at destroying someone else's life.

If the van driver was unaware he hit a cyclist then he was distracted. Now why would that be I wonder?

Shameful. In both cases.
