Manchester’s cyclists urged to pedal-power through wintry weather

Tips and resources online for keeping Manchester on two wheels throughout the winter

Manchester’s cyclists are being urged to pedal-power through wintry weather and not to put their bikes away during the colder months.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched its winter cycling campaign, which will equip people with the advice and information they need to continue to enjoy the benefits of a life on two wheels while temperatures drop and the days get shorter.

6 Top tips to keep you cycling through winter

How to winter-proof your bike

The Best winter bib tights and cycling trousers

A series of events across the region have been arranged to help people prepare for colder and wetter journeys, including cycle training and bike maintenance courses, and advice sessions at bike shops, where experts will be able to give attendees’ bikes a check while they pick up a goodie bag and take advantage of discounted offers.

TfGM’s cycling team’s top tips for cycling during winter 2015/2016 include:

· Get your bike fit for the freeze – carry out important maintenance checks

· Be seen – make sure you can be clearly seen, with suitable clothing and by careful positioning on the road, and that your bike has effective lights and reflectors

· Stay warm – invest in some waterproof and warm gear, like gloves and overshoes

· Adapt – think about changing your route to gritted main roads and be extra-aware of motorists’ reduced visibility

Councillor Chris Paul, Active Travel and Cycling Champion for the TfGM Committee, said: “The benefits of cycling don’t disappear with the falling temperatures and dark rush hours.

“As long as you and your bike are well-equipped, the winter months can be a great time to get out and about.

“You’re still keeping fit, beating the traffic, reducing congestion for other road users, saving money and being good to the environment – you just need to spend a little more time preparing before you head out on the road.”
