Appeal launched to replace the bike of Grimsby cyclist who was knocked unconscious and robbed

Local not-for-profit company is looking to raise around £400

An appeal has been launched after a cyclist was brutally robbed of his bike in Grimsby. Grimsby Cycle Hub, a not-for-profit community interest company, says it is looking to raise £400 to buy a replacement after the cyclist was pushed off and left unconscious on the ground - “because no one should have to put up with that.”

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that the 27-year-old man was cycling along the pathway beside the A180 at around 5.10pm on Tuesday, December 1 when he was attacked by a group of two or three men in the area near Icelandic Seachill. They pushed him off his bike and struck him with a weapon and when he later regained consciousness, his blue and silver Giant bike was missing.

Janine Walker, the managing director of Grimsby Cycle Hub, said she was appalled when she read about the attack. "It is bad enough just leaving him unconscious but to take his bike in that way is just incomprehensible.”

Following a suggestion from a customer, she is hoping to raise enough money to replace the bike. Staff are hoping that the victim of the attack will come forward so that they can present the bike to him.

"One of our customers came in and they said they wanted us to take donations to try to get this guy a new bike. We thought it was a fabulous idea.

"It appeared as if the guy was cycling home from work and it could potentially have been his only form of transport. It's just getting up to Christmas and people have enough worries of their own without something like this happening."

Donations can be made via Just Giving.

Regarding the attack, anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting log number 427 of December 1.

Speaking about the incident, DCI Nicky Miller said:

"This happened in a busy area. Many workers use this path to travel to and from work and we would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious – no matter how insignificant they believe their information to be – to get in touch.

"Did you see anyone hanging around the area or riding a blue and silver bike? Do you have CCTV which shows people heading to or from this path? If so, we want to hear from you."

Miller emphasised that incidents such as this are rare, but said there were steps that could be taken to reduce the risk of being assaulted or robbed. "Where possible, don't walk or ride alone and keep any valuables out of sight."
