Video: Team Cannondale Giro d’Italia training camp on Mount Teide

Riders and team staff talk about how an altitude training camp works

As the Giro d’Italia gets underway, you’ll hear be hearing plenty of talk about high altitude training camps. We’ve all got a fair idea what they entail (riding around high up) but for a bit more insight, there’s this latest video from Team Cannondale.

Team manager Sebastian Weber talks about the benefits of the location, how the training is structured and what the team hopes to get out of the camp. Nutritionist Nigel Mitchell talks about the physiological effects of being at altitude and how diet needs to be tweaked in response to that.

Of the riders, Simon Clarke talks about his responsibilities as road captain during the Giro, while Rigoberto Uran expresses his hope that he can get onto the top step of the podium after finishing second in 2013 and 2014.

If none of that’s of interest, the scenery looks rather nice, so you could just watch it for that.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.
