Angry Yeovil cyclist says police should be called to illegal drivers dodging roadworks

Drivers taking restricted route to avoid heavy traffic near station

A cyclist has called for police action in Yeovil, where he says motorists are breaking the law by using a restricted shortcut to avoid roadworks.

The anonymous cyclist said a route out of Yeovil Pen Mill station is meant only for buses and taxis, but drivers are ignoring the law - and he has been almost knocked off his bike every day this week.

He told Somerset Live: "Every morning I cycle by the station and so many cars are coming down the wrong way nearly taking me out.

"It has happened every day this week. If it had only happened once then I could accept it but as it has happened to me every day then it is probably going on all the time.

"I think a police officer should be there to fine everybody because what they are doing is illegal."

I've ridden along the same route once and seen at least three cars drive the wrong way in the few seconds I was within sight.

Obviously they shouldn't do it but if you live on Lyde road and want to get to the A30 you have to either go on the most ridiculous detour right around and then through the town centre ending up by going through the most frustrating set of traffic lights known to man or just go through the entrance. It is not as if they are going down a one way road it is quite legitimate for them to go all the way to the entrance and all of the way from it on the other side.

The only bit against the law is just going through the gate.

If they nearly hit the cyclist reporting the facts then he was probably going through the entrance in the "buses and taxis only" section and not on the marked cycle lane next to it so he might be just as guilty as the drivers.

I do not ride on pavements or through red lights but If I was driving here I would go through the entrance myself rather than a detour which could easily take hours.
