South Korean man cycles for 235 days to reach Anfield... but fails to get a ticket for the match and so watches it in a pub

A young Liverpool fan has cycled all the way from South Korea to watch Liverpool play at Anfield. After hearing that he couldn’t get a ticket and had to watch Tuesday’s Chelsea match in a pub, the club have offered him a tour of the ground and seat for the match against Tottenham next week.

The BBC reports that Jungyu Lee cycled for 235 days and over 10,000 miles to reach the stadium.

His journey took him through China, Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands and the UK. The Siberian freeway was particularly tough, apparently, due to the road conditions.

Lee says that one of his main reasons for cycling – other than the cost – was so that he could make a few stops on the way.

“I want to study here, and if I have the opportunity I want to start my career here. On my way I visited three different professional football clubs in Russia, one in Estonia and three in Germany picking up advice and information for me to achieve my dream.

“I hope my story might help me to make contact with the right people at Liverpool FC to see if I can train as an assistant coach and hopefully make some useful contacts in the football industry.”

He doesn’t seem to have much inclination to make the return journey though.

“I think it’ll be quite hard to do another journey like this again. I want to stay here and study and train as soon as I can. I like Liverpool FC and the Beatles as well – this city is for me.”
