Velo South - pre-registrations pass 30,000 ahead of entries opening on March 1

100 mile Sussex closed road sportive continues to generate big interest - pre-registration closes on Wednesday and you have to pre-register to enter

Pre-registrations for Velo South have now reached 30,000 with three days to go until entries for the new 100 mile closed road sportive open. 15,000 places will be up for grabs and if you want one of them you will need to pre-register by midnight on Wednesday – it's free and simply involves giving your name and email address.

As yet, the organisers haven’t said how much entries will cost, but as we said in our piece about the sportive’s official launch last Friday it’s likely that they will be somewhere in the region of the prices for last year’s Velo Birmingham event - which is owned and organised by the same company. Velo Birmingham tickets cost £75 for a standard entry or £115 for fast track entries plus booking fees of £3.75 and £5.75 respectively.

We’d expect Velo South to cost something in that region also - as a comparison this year’s Ride London/Surrey costs £69 to enter - slightly less but there are upwards of another 10,000 people on the 100 mile ride.

Ride London/Surrey continues to prove that there is a strong appetite for closed road events - in the South East of England at least - so it will be interesting to see where the Velo South pitches the cost of entry and if there is any resistance should it be higher than Velo Birmingham. There’s no denying though that the course on offer should make for a great day’s riding with the added incentive of the Goodwood start and finish, and of course when it comes to sportives nothing really beats riding on closed roads.

On Friday we gave you an early bit of route analysis from our resident Sussex cyclist, Vecchiojo which you can read here - if you’re expecting a Sunday bimble though the lanes - think again. You can get more of a flavour of what to expect with this official video from the Velo South launch.

Fair to say though, apart from what challenges the roads you’re riding over will have to offer, the proof of the Velo South pudding will only be revealed when riders start crossing the finish line on September 23rd. What’s certainly clear already though is that in a year when this is one of only two closed road sportives on offer in the UK there are plenty of willing to give Velo South a taste.

For more information check out the Velo South websit, www.velosouth.com or via it's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Can't think of anything worse than 15000 rapha-ites let loose on open roads.

I don't know, Armageddon is quite fun.  Really there's some people who have a chip on their shoulder about such events, and like to tell us about it every time. This board is awash with reverse snobs. As for Rapha, I got some shorts from ebay last year, and they are... wonderful (its the yoke on the bibs.) I am a convert. I might not fancy their full prices but I will certainly be keeping an eye out for bargains.

Moan, moan, moan. These events take time, planning, effort and thank goodness someone is doing it. Yes people are making money and good on them; that's how it works. Otherwise there wouldnt be this event or much else going on in the world for that matter. I hope I get a place as it will be brilliant. Sign me up and send me the invoice.

I know. Equally we are allowed to voice the opinion that we think it's overpriced.

Don't forget that one rider's small change is another man's small fortune.

Seems that you have to get to Goodwood the day before to pick up your number etc UNLESS you pay a higher "VIP" entry fee which means they will send it to you.

That, along with an admin fee, means that I'm sacking this off.

Thanks for the club tip. Hopefully we’ll be in touch once Brightonians.

We’re going for this, general entry, in spite of all the shitness.

Got our places immediately this morning, which would suggest a lot of cold feet at the cost and registration nonsense.

No worries!  Drop me a line once you're down.

As someone who marshalled Velo BIRMINGHAM it was not a PR disaster. The residents were all informed, some choose not to read the leaflets put through their doors. The roads were only closed for specific periods, and for those that couldn’t wait we had a huge fleet of motorcycles ( I was one of them) escorting vehicles who had a real need along/across the closed route.

The problem with all these closed events, is that the general public want to drive on the roads and do. Pulling down the barriers. Yet if the road is closed for say an armistice day parade that is ok, but anything to do with cyclists they get very angry.

The press like a good story but did they tell the story about the farmer who put a big plank of wood across the road which would have took out any support vehicle or motorcyclist. When I tried to remove it, it was too heavy for me, I was met with tons of abuse from the local residents.

So I guess this means there will be an extra 30,000 cars on the roads to/from Sussex that weekend as MAMILs drive there from all over the country in order to go for a bike ride.

Wonderful.

I heard a different story from a colleague who lives in Wombourne. Unlike some NIMBYs, he was (and is) happy with the event taking place but disappointed with the information / consultation.

And yes, lots of people don't like cyclists.

If you like the freedom to time-challenge your way through Sussex, without any traffic*, and don't mind paying a premium for it, fair enough.

* the only traffic free sportive section I've done, had a few drivers  ignoring the event marshalls.

One of only two closed road sportives in the UK?  RideLondon, Velo South... last time I checked Wales and Scotland were still part of the UK, so Cardiff Velothon and Etape Caledonia make four...

I hope the Velo organisers have learned from the Birmingham PR debacle, and will properly consult with local residents this time on road closures.

A booking fee???

Pure greed, even if it is yet to be confirmed for this event.

Only a matter of time before they're outlawed - they're already on dodgy ground since the ban on credit card surchages.
