Near Miss of the Day 161: Close pass on country lane

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s Hampshire

The latest video in our Near Miss of the Day feature shows the moment a driver overtook a cyclist so closely on a country lane in Hampshire that it nearly forced him off the road.

It happened to road.cc reader Neil, who told us: "I get near misses all the time like most cyclists.

"I have front and rear cameras so have captured a lot of them, most are just idiots but I found this driver today particularly dangerous .

"This was on Winchester Hill in Hampshire on my commute home, the road is narrow for about a mile with few passing places.

"I always pull in where I can if I know a vehicle is behind ( I had done three times already on this hill today ) but this guy was not waiting !"

He added: "I have not contacted police, I was unharmed, just angry!"

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

"We are a very professional and reliable business carrying out work to the highest standards."

Then it would be a shame, wouldn't it, if this video of your absolutely appalling driving should somehow end up splashed all over social media  ?

I thought that and then realised that NY was the web designer address. It says that the business is in Hambledon which is a small, pretty Meon Valley village. Then a look at the business correspondence address and that puts it on a big industrial estate in Portsmouth. Ideas of grandeur?

(023) 92 is the Portsmouth telephone code. This kind of pass is normal for the Musher race. I often ride Old Winchester Hill and get a courtesy close pass all too often but this one is closer than normal. You have nowhere to go with the high banks at the side of the road. Hampshire Constbulary do have an incident reporting portal, but as you were not injured I would not hold my breath. Here it is anyway:

I bet those panel vans make a splendid noise should one give them a good hard side of the fist whack.
