Breaking news: Richie Porte out of Tour de France after early crash today

BMC Racing star was one of the favourites for the overall - but is first casualty of today's cobbled stage...

Richie Porte is out of the Tour de France after crashing just 7 kilometres into today's 156.5-kilometre stage from Arras to Roubaix.

The BMC Racing rider had been one of the favourites for the overall victory at this year's race and this morning was 10th on the General Classification, 57 seconds behind his BMC Racing team mate Greg Van Avermaet.

Porte appeared to sustain a collarbone injury in the crash, with other riders involved including Movistar's José Joaquin Rojas, who also abandoned, and Andre Greipel of Lotto-Soudal, who received assistance from the medic al car.

There was one non-starter this morning, and he was the rider who crossed the line first the last time a Tour de France stage went over the pavé – Tony Martin, winner of Stage 4 in Cambrai in 2015.

On yesterday’s stage into Amiens, the Katusha rider sustained a vertebral compression fracture in the same crash that caused Dan Martin of UAE Team Emirates to lose 1 minute 15 seconds to his rivals for the overall.

At the time of writing there are around 120 kilometres remaining of today's stage, which includes no fewer than 15 secteurs of pavé totalling 22 kilometres, the longest in the race since the 1980s.

Poor Richie just can’t catch a brake can he poor guy. It look from the pictures I saw that a couple of spectators might have been involved in the group of riders coming down, there was a lady on the side of the road being help by people and another with what looked like a cut arm. Hope there all

Ah no 2 Awful for Porte, especially after last year and the team BMC win on Stage 3.

I am surprised no one has yet suggested Team Sky paid off someone to take down Richie though...
