Live blog: Ian Walker wins the North Cape 4000, Metro tweet footage of truck driver nearly turning into cyclist (and blames cyclist) + more

All the day's news and views from the site and beyond...

Occasionally our live blog can be a little slow to load, give it a few seconds and if you're still having no joy then try refreshing the page.

Arriving at road.cc in 2017 via 220 Triathlon Magazine, Jack dipped his toe in most jobs on the site and over at eBikeTips before being named the new editor of road.cc in 2020, much to his surprise. His cycling life began during his students days, when he cobbled together a few hundred quid off the back of a hard winter selling hats (long story) and bought his first road bike - a Trek 1.1 that was quickly relegated to winter steed, before it was sadly pinched a few years later. Creatively replacing it with a Trek 1.2, Jack mostly rides this bike around local cycle paths nowadays, but when he wants to get the racer out and be competitive his preferred events are time trials, sportives, triathlons and pogo sticking - the latter being another long story.

Did the lorry driver have to make it a three point turn because he had to brake (to avoid killing the cyclist), or did he get that wrong too? In any event, he really needs to learn to check his mirrors more, I think.  Clearly he's one of that (very common) class of drivers who think that indicators grant priority rather than showing intention.

Well done to that man taking the video! How many of us would have spotted what was going to happen?

This is something that drivers of long wheel based vehicles are taught to do, due to their abysmal turning circle , and other road users are expected to take this into account- See HC rule 221.

But cockwomble observation skills nevertheless.

That vid should be shown in courts where cyclists have been killed by trucks turning left.

The driver assumed that inidicating gave him right of way.

I also think he was telling helmet cam not to worry as he wasn't in danger as driverman was turning left and not right (hadn't he seen the clear indication). I think driver man was 100% oblivious of the other cyclist.

Blid spot my arse!

Does anyone actually ever challenge these media outlets?

Is there anything illegal with a media company editing a video to make it look like something else, trying to promote hatred?

Metro?

A rag with content the value of its cover price. Owned by the same mob as the Daily Mail.

C’mon Dr Ian!

Video doesn't show enough of the low loader and cyclist. Did the cyclist creep up the left before the lorry moved and hence was hidden?

Captions on the metro video were nonsense anyhow.

The cyclist was ahead of the lorry well before the turn and was in the left lane. The lorry was in the right lane. If he wanted to change lanes he should wait until the road was clear. Whatever happened the cyclist clearly did not creep up the side of the lorry. At worst she passed him in a diffrent lane and the lorry was in the wrong lane for a left turn.

At 11seconds you can see the killing machine in the hands of a I don't give a fuck because I'm not bothered to look to my left wanker ever so careful driver and his unicorns overtake the cyclist a few metres before the junction.

This is contrary to the HC not to mention it threatens the life of a human being because this knobjockey can't be fucking arsed to look, so it should be deemed as dangerous driving. Cunts like this kill and maim with impunity and not give two fucks and people like Metro, daily heil and THINK will continue to blame the victims/vulnerable.

Government sponsorsed victim blaming at its finest here which is contrasry to the HC about overtaking at/near  a junction and cutting in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7lBvN80JaQ

Sad that even the Metro has joined in the cycle bashing.  Who owns them now, would it be the Murdochs perchance?  Or the Express group, or some other bunch of cycle haters?

Great news about Dr Walker.

I'm not a twitterer - did Metro come back after all that to try and explain why they thought that it was the cyclist's fault?  Or are they too busy swotting up on the HC?
