London cyclist killed in collision with black cab named as geneticist Maria Bitner-Glindzic

Great Ormond Street Hospital leads tributes to “a true leader in her field”

A cyclist who lost her life following a collision with a cab and another vehicle in Clerkenwell this week has been named as Maria Bitner-Glindzic, a professor of human and molecular genetics at the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.

The London Evening Standard reports that police were called to a crash between a stationary vehicle, a licensed Hackney taxi cab and Bitner-Glindzic in St John Street shortly after 11.30am on Wednesday. She was rushed to hospital, but died the following day.

The drivers of the two vehicles involved stopped at the scene. They were not arrested and are assisting police with enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident – particularly those with dashcam footage – have been asked to contact the Met Police’s serious collision investigation unit on 0208 991 9555, via Twitter @MetCC or by calling 101 quoting reference 2701/19 Sept.

In a statement, Great Ormond Street Hospital said: "It is with profound sadness that we learnt of the death of Professor Maria Bitner-Glindzicz, Clinical and Molecular Geneticist at Great Ormond Street Hospital and UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.

“Maria was a true leader in her field, a very valued colleague, and internationally recognised for her contributions to genetics. Her important work focused on children and adults with sight and hearing loss. It included pioneering research into the genetic causes of deafness in children and therapies that she hoped would one day restore vision. She was a genuine advocate for her patients and an articulate voice who tirelessly pushed for greater support for children affected by sight and hearing impairments.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Maria's family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

RIP Maria.

As with any life cut short on our roads, a massive senseless loss for friends, family and colleagues.

In this case it would seem a massive loss for society, medical research and children's health.

Hope the taxi driver isn't a former bell ringer.
