JD Sports Fashion and Sports Direct said to be interested in Evans Cycles

Sports Direct recently rescued House of Fraser from administration

JD Sports Fashion and Sports Direct International are reported to have joined Halfords in tabling indicative offers for Evans Cycles.

Evans is said to require more than £10m to see it through the next few months of trading and ECI Partners, the private equity owners of the business, have been inviting bids.

Last week we reported interest from Halfords and Sky Sports reports that JD Sports and Sports Direct have joined them.

JD Sports, which owns the Go Outdoors chain, is described as having a “genuine interest,” although the position of the Mike Ashley-owned Sports Direct is less clear.

Sports Direct recently rescued House of Fraser from administration and last week sacked the department store’s directors and senior management.

ECI bought Evans Cycles in 2015 and refinanced the company the following year following a fall in profits. It has been lossmaking over the past two years during a period of expansion.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Out of JD Sports, Sports Direct and (as reported a week or so ago) Halfords, I think Halfords would be the least bad. Of course there might be others we haven't heard about.

Whoever buys them will be no bad thing, as long as the Pinnacle bike brand and designers are kept on,as they do make some very good bikes like the Arkose, Dolomite and Neon/Lithium hybrid range all with threaded bottom brackets. None of this pressfit 30 rubbish that a lot of Boardman bikes come with. And good kids bikes.

Most bike shops are expensive in store so online is the way to go. I’ve never had issues with ordering online from Evans, just use click and collect. Another bonus is being able to use Tesco club card vouchers, triple value.

Ordered a brand new Arkose from their EBay store earlier this year  and saved 20% on normal online price. If Halfords buy them though I can imagine quite a few stores being closed, in Leeds there’s a cycle republic close by. Service at Leeds store I’ve used has been very good.

JD Sports definitely the lesser of two evils there.
Imagine a Sports Direct owned Evans **shudders** ... fixes with garishly coloured rims, full sus MTB(-SO)s with ugly welds and stickers saying "not designed for stunts" and a clothing rail full of Muddy Fox tat at "up to 75% off" tags.

Here’s to hoping Mike Ashley gets nowhere near Evans! For all the stick they get from some fronts they do provide a great presence on many high streets and still represent a place worth looking at for options, price marching and all

True, price matching is great, but I'd probably buy more from them if they were cheaper like Wiggle or Chain reaction. When I go into there stores I don't buy anything because their prices are high and I wouldn't buy a bike from them.

I'm not their kind of store customer, I do buy from their online store.
