Cycling IS the new golf... Former golf academy to get off-road cycle circuit and mountain bike trail

Work on South Bucks Country Park to be complete by 2021

South Bucks District Council (SBDC) has approved proposals to transform a former golf academy into a country park in Stoke Poges. Bucks Free Press reports that plans for the 22-hectare site include an off-road cycle circuit, a mountain bike trail and a café.

In October 2016, South Bucks closed its nine-hole golf course, known as the Academy, due to falling demand and increased cost to the council to operate it.

The decision was taken to re-landscape the site to create a public open space.

Following a consultation, plans were drawn up for an enclosed cycle track, for use by the public and clubs; a mountain bike trail; a BMX area, jogging and walking trails; a grassed amphitheatre area; a children’s play area and a café.

Work is due to start early in 2019 and will take two years.

Leader of SBDC, Nick Naylor, said: “This is an exciting development for the council which has received overwhelming public support.

“We are turning an underused facility into something of far wider benefit to the community to support our aims to improve the public health of residents by expanding their opportunities for open space leisure.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Darts - snooker - golf. All rubbish 'sports' that are simply akin to playing a computer game. More skill in a playing Street Fighter in the arcades.

The fact that fat people can be professionals in all the above makes them games.

And proper sportsmen, as Tom Dumoulin can testify, know how to shit properly, not like darts players.

Little skill in golf or snooker?

I disagree.

Stoke Poges, setting for Gray's Elegy and some ferocious handicap road races in the 1970s.

Gray wrote the poem with the best title ever - Ode on the death of a favourite cat drowned in a tub of goldfishes.

Does anyone know why the road circuit is listed as being for time trials and not racing. Is it to do with the conditions of the planning approval or restrictions on space.

Wow, that sounds good. It's a little known fact that Slough was the home of one of the UK's first BMX race tracks back in the 80s. As this is close to the M25, and also to the existing Hayes and Runnymede tracks, I can expect a lot of riders will be using the BMX facility. The mountain bike trails sound interesting too. I'm fairly certain a velodrome will be well used as well.

Standard golf quote regurgatated yet again. Yawn.

Also, it was Mark Twain not Oscar Wilde.

"Cycling is the new golf..."  I hope not.

"Golf is a good walk ruined."  Oscar Wilde.  Cycling, in complete contrast to golf, is enjoyable.
