Angel Madrazo of Burgos-BH has won Stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana from the break today on the first summit finish of this year’s race at the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in the mountains northwest of Valencia.

With overnight leader Nicolas Roche distanced on the final climb today, Astana’s Miguel Angel Lopez moves back into the overall lead he held following Saturday’s opening team time trial.

The Colombian crossed the line alone in fourth place, missing out on the bonus seconds, but was still 12 seconds ahead of his closest pursuers, Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde and Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma.

Full report, result and reaction to follow.
