BikeTube routes set as London prepares for transport strike

Mass cycling encouraged across capital

The routes of five ‘BikeTubes’ have been announced in London as the capital gears up to beat this week’s Underground strikes.

London Cycling Campaign (LCC) predicts that thousands of commuters will take to two wheels today (Tuesday June 9) and Thursday (June 11) as transport unions stage a walkout.

The LCC has organised five ‘BikeTube’ rides into central London. Cyclists will be able to pick up London Cycle Maps and other advice, ‘buddy-up’ and join a ride into London to celebrate the transport freedom that bikes provide.

The five rides are:

Meeting point 7:45 am @ Brixton – Oval – Elephant & Castle – Blackfriars - Holborn

Meeting point 7:45am @ Finsbury Park main gate route – Arsenal - Highbury & Islington – Angel – Moorgate – Mansion House – London Bridge – City Hall

Meeting point 7:45am @ Mile End, Green Bridge route – Stepney Green – Cable Street – Tower Hill – Bank

Meeting point 7:45am @ Ravenscourt Park route – Hammersmith – High Street Kensington – Hyde Park Corner – Charing Cross – Trafalgar Square

Meeting point 7:45am @ Swiss Cottage route – Hampstead – Belsize Park – Chalk Farm – Mornington Crescent – Euston – Gower Street – Tavistock Place – Gray’s Inn Road – Clerkenwell – Farringdon - Moorgate

Chief Executive Koy Thomson said, “Cycling is growing steadily in London with over 250,000 cycle-commuting journeys being made each day. Major transport disruption forces a change in travel behaviour. When people try cycling, they’ll realise that it’s far more efficient, reliable and enjoyable than the tube and stick with it. We predict a major surge in cycling growth.”

London Cycling Campaign is providing support for people wishing to start commuting through a new website www.biketube.org.uk.

The website provides all of the information people need to ‘Bike the Strike’, including:

* Bike Hire and Bike Shop locations for fixing, buying or hiring a bike
* Cycle Maps and Route Planners
* A free commuting advice book
* Ride safely advice and leaflets
* Competition to win a Brompton Bike Pool for your workplace

Koy Thomson said “We urge tube commuters to visit the biketube website and get set to Bike the Strike. Carry on cycling and this will be the last transport disruption to affect you."

Anyone available to join one of the BikeTubes, please email matthew [at] lcc.org.uk or visit www.biketube.org.uk

yeah, I'll be taking a different route to all of those - generally find inexperienced cyclists can be as much of a menace, if not more than most cars on the commute.

In all honesty, if I was a driver in London, I'd be seriously f'cked off with "cyclists", even as a cyclist!

Got to admit I wondered about that + inexperienced cyclists riding in a group in traffic… I'm sure it'll be fine though 39 1
