Keith Bontrager speaking at International Cyclefit Symposium London in January

Aspiring experts in bike fit sign up here...

London bike fit specialists Cyclefit are hosting a two-day event next January with the aim to start a "forum into the relationship between the human body and a bicycle," according to one of the two founders of Cyclefit, Julian Wall.

"ICS is bringing guest speakers from around the world who are all in their own way leaders in their particular field," says Wall. "It will be the first occasion where all the disparate branches of cycling science and the fitting community can come together for a collective learning experience."

The star turn - at least outside the bike fitting community of practitioners, medics and academics - is Keith Bontrager, engineer and mountain bike founding father who coined the legendary and now oft-repeated phrase about bicycle components, "Strong, light, cheap...pick two."

Bontrager's particular subject for ICS will be "The Myth of K.O.P.S." (Knee Over Pedal Spindle) which he has long held strong feelings about but there will also be Dr Jeff Broker from the University of Colorado Springs on 'Pedalling Kinesiology' and Phil Burt from British Cycling and Team Sky on 'Elite Bike Fitting and Injuries' among eight others experts.

The main reason for organising ICS according to Julian Wall and his co-founder Philip Cavell is that, "Bike fitting is by its nature collaborative and broad-skilled; it has become very clear that it is much more effective and enjoyable to learn thoroughly an emerging subject by continually sharing knowledge."

They envisage some of the people who can benefit from the Symposium are:

  • Bike fitters
  • Cycling coaches
  • Manual therapists (physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths)
  • Associated medical community - podiatrists & sports physicians
  • Relevant academic community and researchers
  • Biomechanists with an interest in cycling
  • Cycling retailers especially working in performance sector
  • Bicycle and component designers

Price for the two days at London's Design Centre with complete access to all lectures and practical workshops is £500 inc VAT which includes post-symposium reviews and updates.

It's great to see all these guys working together to advance the subject, but how do we as customers access all this knowledge as a consolidated base, to obtain an informed opinion of how to solve a given issue? I need to get rid of a particular knee pain. I've already got orthotic insoles (I over-pronate). I'm now thinking of booking a session with a cycling/sports rehab guy at Manchester Velodrome for a bike fitting, with (I presume) a focus on cleat positioning. If that doesn't work, what then and why?

Meanwhile, the costs of these treatments is racking up nicely...
