Cancellara wins the Tour of Switzerland

Swiss back on form on home turf

Fabian Cancellara continued his return to form with victory in the nine-stage Tour of Switzerland. On home turf, Cancellara blew away the challenge from Tadej Valjavec who started the final day four seconds ahead. Clad in his red skinsuit as the Swiss time trial champion, Cancellara took almost four minutes out of Valjavec.

Such was Cancellara's dominance of the final day's proceedings that no other rider could get within a minute of him. The next finisher, Tony Martin, who had won the previous day's stage, finished 1:27 down which was enough to secure the second podium spot overall, 2:02 behind Cancellara overall. Defending champion Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic was third overall, 2:24 down.

The win marks a real return to form for Cancellara, who has struggled with illness and injury since his 2008 Tirreno-Adriatico win and Olympic gold in the Beijing time trial. He was unable to defend his World Championship time trial title last year, citing mental fatigue, nor did he contend the Tirreno Adriatico this year despite showing some decent form in the Tour of California prologue, which he won for a second year in succession.
