Shocking footage has emerged on social media of what appears to be a driver deliberately ramming a cyclist off his bike.
The footage was first spotted by the Irish Mirror who shared news of the incident in Dundalk this weekend, with the Irish authorities since confirming that they are investigating and the cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment for "non-life threatening injuries".
In the short clip, which also appears to be recorded by the driver of the vehicle, a voice can be heard saying: "How heartless I am, see him on the bike, look."
The motorist then drives into the back of the cyclist, a loud thud can be heard, before laughing as the voice says: "LOL. LOL"

An Garda Síochána subsequently released a statement confirming that they are investigating a road traffic collision involving the driver of a car and a cyclist that happened on Castletown Road in Dundalk, County Louth, at around 3pm on Sunday 27 November.
"The cyclist was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for treatment of non-life threatening injuries," the statement explained. "Enquiries are ongoing."

I think what's most worrying is that the driver carried out that assault and yet was happy to film it and put it out on the internet for public consumption. Whatever the Garda might say, the motorist was clearly pretty convinced that they would face no consequences for this action...
It's obvious that the driver is unsociable, uncivilised, immature and likely mentally challenged; such people don't even consider consequences..
This exact case should set a sea change in place - I hope they find him and the law goes for the jugular.
1) That driver should have his licence revoked and should never be allowed to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle again.
2) That driver used his motor vehicle as a weapon and should be charged with intentionally inflicted GBH.
Agreed! Make this case the precedent that, "if you use your car as a weapon you spend significant time in prison and you never drive again."
Drivers should be scared to even seem to be using their car as a weapon in case they ruin their own lives.

The media will report this as a lone maniac with no bearing on the issue of whether such dangerous devices should be so readily available to the public, or whether motor traffic should continue to operate immune to violent crime laws.

Come on, don't be so cynical. The USA is a great example where a number of incidents (especially mass shootings at schools) has led to a massive crackdown on dangerous equipment (guns) being made available to anyone that wants them. I'm sure we can follow their beacon of shining light!

Sounds fishy to me. It's not even vaguely plausible that a car driver would maliciously do something like that without substantial provocation.

We are definitely only seeing one side of it.
I'm sure that when the people with radios and earpieces review the available CCTV, and see that the driver didn't drive into a single cyclist in the preceding 50m nor the following 50m, it will show that the car driver was outright incapable of hitting a cyclist.
And I'm pretty sure the cyclist was guilty of an offence under Section 5 of The Public Order Act, too. I'm not quite sure how yet, but I'd put £20 on it.

You must have led a very sheltered life, it's totally plausible, and sufficient provocation for some drivers is that a cyclist exists and is on the road and many think their dangerous driving is a laugh
