Susannah Constantine (from Trinny and Susannah) says she hates cyclists so much she would run over her own husband if she saw him out on his bike

‘I'm going to get in my car aged 90 and I'm going to kill the lot of them and go and die in jail’...

Susannah Constantine – the fashion presenter best known as one half of Trinny and Susannah – says she hates cyclists so much that if she saw her own husband out on the road in Lycra, she’d run him over.

Speaking on the latest edition of her My Wardrobe Malfunction podcast, Constantine offered to join actress Sarah Parish on whatever sponsored physical challenge she had planned next.

Parish said she was due to do a charity bike ride for her and her husband’s organisation, The Murray Parish Trust, which works to ensure that children affected by major trauma can receive the best emergency care as close to home as possible.

“Oh I hate cycling,” replied Constantine. “I won’t cycle. No, I fucking hate cyclists. My husband is a cyclist and if I see him on the road on his bicycle, I’m going to run him over.

“And the day when I know I’m about to die, I’m going to get in my car, aged 90, and I’m going to drive into cyclists wearing Lycra, kill the lot of them and go and die in jail.”

Constantine went on to say that she had once agreed to go for a ride in Sussex with her husband, stipulating that she would not wear Lycra, “and if I’m seen by anybody, I’m going to cycle behind a bush and hide. I don’t know what it is. I just find them so irritating.”

Parish theorised, “I think it’s because they’re quite arrogant, aren’t they? And you’re driving behind them for ages and they won’t go single file.”

Perhaps realising that they were only talking about this because of Parish’s own charity ride, Constantine then said: “But off road is different. Are you going to go off road?”

“No,” replied Parish.

It turns out the charity ride will be 700 miles long, although Parish had only planned on doing part of it herself.

“If you do the whole thing, I’ll do the whole thing,” offered Constantine.

Without wishing to be naysayers, we feel like the odds of that happening are fairly low.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

i'll also add here- this woman i bet has no idea how the vehicle she is driving works, nor how complicated and time consuming it is to come up with the idea to get it to move along. A bicycle is a crankshaft, with two leggy pistons moving it, some gears take that power from the drive train and supply it to the rear wheel, providing forward motion. Simple ish. The car however. The starter motor is only activated once the CDI is turned on by the key in the igntion barrel. The battery storing energy, which is only there because of the alternator and electrical current, which it gets from the engine spinning over, but is converted to DC not AC by the regulator/ rectifier, sends power to a solenoid switch- that allows this stored energy to be sent down to the starter motor and to ignition coils[ if its a petrol engine]. The cam chain, tensioned normally by a mechanicaly sprung device, or the cambelt, tensioned with a pulley, allows the starter motor to spin the crank, which spins the pistons up into the bores, just tenths of milimetres before the crowns hit the valves. Those valves open and shut many thousands of times a minute once the engine begins. Fuel injectors or carbs spray tiny amounts of fuel, at a rough ratio of 14 to one, into the cylinders. The spark plugs ignite in each cylinder at exactly the right moment for combustion to occur, sending the pistons shooting back down into the bores, rotating the crankshaft. The oil pump starts sending lubricating oil around the engine oil galleries, to enable moving metallic parts to rub against eachother. The water pump begins to spin, but the thermostat is shut. The engine warms up as it rotates the crank, valves opening and shutting as anccient dinosaurs are exploded in a very tightly sealed chamber. The driver pushed a pedal to allow more fuel and air into the chambers, which increases the revolutions the engine can do. The driver pushes a clutch pedal, which separates the pressure plate from the friction and steel plates, enabling the engine to gradually [slip] engine torque to the input shaft of the gearbox. That is then sent via the gears themselves, onto the out put shaft. The output shaft sends the spinning motion onto the drive shaft, or down the prop to the rear wheels. Those wheels rotate. The whole thing is hideously complex and most people who operate such machinery have no clue how it actually works. Whereas the modern bicycle, you push down, turn the crank, you go forwards. Such a simple design is also the most energy effecient. But im just an idiot cyclist, so what do i know about cars.

How is this any different to me writing something like ‘When I’m 90 I’m going out in my car to run down and kill Tory politicians.’ on any chosen corrupt social media network?  They all chose to be Tory politicians, just like we choose to use a bike whenever we want.  I’d be reported to the police and charged, ect.

This is acceptable now is it?  It would be bigger news, if it was said about anything else but because its just cyclists it gets dismissed, laughed at, ignored or passed off as clickbait.

I used to commute 100 miles a week by bike and now feel its no longer feel safe to do so.  I tried picking it up again at the start of lockdown thinking it would be perfect conditions for peaceful quiet roads.  The very first day of minimal traffic, I get run off the road by some teenager in a Nissan Skyline.   Have tried a few times since but have definitely noticed a worsening of attitude on the roads recently, as if it couldn’t get any worse.  Now I’m one extra unnecessary car on the road every day and feel pretty sick of having given up.

Ah yes was she the chubby sidekick of that snobby tart? Riding a bike would probably do her the world of good and in which universe does she think she is going to make it to 90.

If she's ever in an accident involving a person on a bike this is going to come back to haunt her.

I wonder if there's any cyclists near where she lives that would consider lying in wait and then contriving a collision and reaping a big insurance payout? I could just imagine her defense  trying to claim that the cyclist 'literally threw themselves under the car' and then having to pay for a nice shiny new bike for the cyclist.

She's a vocal supporter of and active participant in fox hunting. Her daughter was pictured with a bloodied face and a dead duck they'd shot.
I think the authorities ought to confiscate her gun if she's going round making death threats.

car drivers wont go single file either. Its very irritating when you have to ride at 10 mph in a 60 zone for miles because of all the selfish bastards sitting side by side and sitting in queues.  Half of them dont even have passengers in their seats! theyre just wide to be annoying. She hates cyclists because she has a primitive brain. Its proven that cyclists and those who are ok with cyclists being on the road are more intelligent. Lower intelligence people dont like cyclists because they see them as an obstacle. Higher intelligence people recognise the good things about cycling and plan their overtake accordingly.

She may say she hates cycling the most, but I bet she hates being an irrelevant has-been who nobody has heard of since the early 2000s, and even then only as "the other one" from "Trinny and the other one", even more.

Cycling gives me so much. Longer life, better health, more money, nicer public spaces, and a cleaner conscience. Knowing it infuriates people like her is just the icing on the cake.

And the more ugly 'other one too'.  A real fuckpig if ever I saw one. She has a face which resembles a bulldog licking piss from a nettle.

Classy. What she said and believes need attacking, attacking her for her looks is reducing yourself to her level and sexist too. Your attitude is what's ugly.

I can't agree with this. It's reducing yourself to below her level.

Otherwise, well said though.

Stupid, ignorant and unnecessary comment. Makes you look like an idiot. Go away please and grow up. Then come back with more mature things to say.

We have to get a grip here! It is not necessary to pay attention to what people like these 2 tedious women say: for them, any publicity is better than no publicity. They will say anything to be noticed. Also, we don't have to go out to bat in favour of militant cyclists who insist on riding 2 abreast because they think they're entitled to. However, we DO have to be militant about close passing, illegal unbroken white line crossing and illegal red light crashing. I didn't say 'illegal close passing' because the F***h, at least in Lancashire where they have never prosecuted for it, have made any passing where the cyclist isn't dead or seriously injured legal as far as they are concerned.

I think you've made a really interesting point, that I suppose the whole world is still struggling to get it's head around (I know I am). With the rise of social media and communications technology in general, comments that might previously have been confined to pub conversations, or sections of the print media, can be disseminated much more widely. Much of the content on the road.cc news feed is basically highlighting ill-informed comments from the general public posted underneath pro-cycling announcements of various kinds. In times past, such comments would have been confined to that person and the circle of friends, and would never have troubled us. Yet now, I see these comments and can't seem to help getting wound up by them. Likewise, some niche online conversation by a D-list celebrity. I'm really not sure even of the point I'm trying to make...

Lancs plod are a bunch of lazy twats. And I say this as an ex Lancs police community volunteer. I just dont bother reporting close passes, mobile phone use to them any more. I have better things to do with my life than spend an eternity hanging on the telephone waiting for some disinterested fuckwit to answer.

Lets rephrase her comment a little bit just to make a point:

"Oh I hate ******s,” replied Constantine. “I won’t support BLM. No, I fucking hate blacks. My husband is a ******* and if I see him on the road on his bicycle, I’m going to shoot him"

Now see how offensive her comment REALLY IS? If she said what she said about black people everyone would be going apeshit and rightfully so. She said it about cyclists so it doesn't really matter. Cyclists are just "not equal" in the eyes of the law or the general population. I'd happily join some protesting about this.

Not quite the same - we're not on our bikes all the time and it's a choice we make.

However, there are daily protests about this - hop on a bike and let people see you having fun cycling around.

Titanus' analogy might not be perfect (I suppose few analogies are, to be fair) but I think it's a useful one. People who ride bikes may make a choice to do so, but it's also clear that we are a minority that it seems to be acceptable for large portions of the and general population to treat in ways that are obvioulsy unacceptable. In his excellent book Bike Nation, Peter Walker writes that the way people on bikes are treated is a civil rights issue. After all, it's obvious from much of the content that appears on this site that we don't benefit from the full protection of the law. The prevalence of punishment close passes and the like indicates that at least some motorists are happy to terrorise us to 'encourage' us give up cycling and get off the roads.

Do you know what Peter, this is the only online forum I get involved in. Every story on my local news website, Blog Preston, which involves cyclists, gets the knuckle draggers out in force. No insurance, no tax, two abreast, blah blah blah. It's better not to get involved, you'll never change their minds. It worries me just how much hatred there is out there for people who simply ride a bike for pleasure or commuting. Is there this much hatred for golfers, or footballers?

Not that it is excuse or solace, but I don't think we are seen as simply people who ride a bike. Those would be the ones we see in Holland etc, just people cut&paste from a canalside café scene and placed on a bike. But once the cycling itself becomes the purpose of the exercise then we become 'cyclists', the hated species.

dont bother even reading comments on newspaper articles, i worked it out a long time ago- theyre either unemployed or retired. They must be. Just watch how quicky comments sprout up as soon as cycling is mentioned. Ie, they must be free to read, sign in and type, within literally minutes, as they have nothing else to do. So that means their opinion doesnt matter. Everyone else is at work, or doing something. Like on this forum. I;m sure everyone here has a job, but only comments afterwards or before they go to work. We dont comment ten seconds after an article mentioning bicycles is published, because we're too busy working. So the commenters who reply to newspaper articles are unemployed or old, thus their opinions dont matter.
