UPDATED - A helping hand during the pandemic: tell us about local cycling businesses near you!

These are unprecedented times, and bike industry has been hit hard... tell us about the cycling businesses near you that deserve some extra promo to help them ride through this storm

road.cc is a small company and we’re feeling the pinch like many other businesses; but unlike many in the cycling industry, we operate online and like to think we have a strong voice in the industry, so want to make use of it to help if we can.

How to cycle responsibly in a time of pandemic

So, we’re putting out a request for you to give a shout out to a business near to you or that you love. Maybe you own a bike shop yourself, or are offering a cycling-related service - a coach switching your business online, for instance. We want to help you let people know that you’re open for business and what you can offer.

If you see something that you like then if you can, do something to help them along. That could be booking a bike fit for when we all get back to normal, or getting a gift voucher.

We already put out a call for suggestions on Facebook, and here are the businesses that you've told us about so far...

You can nominate on Facebook here, drop a link in the comments below or email us at info [at] road.cc

Glad to see Paul Hewittt has made the list. Top bloke, top shop. Nothing too much trouble, will never sell you anything you don't need. Will happily offer you a brew too. Has some lovely gear in stock, also a number of signed shirts and skinsuits in frames on the wall from the many grateful Olympians and professionals who Paul has helped.

Shout out to Sargent & Co in Mountgrove Road, Brownswood Park (Near Finsbury Park). Bike rebuilder and refurbisher. The shop is a treasure trove of steel frames, old Campag and Huret, and downtube shifters:

The shops I know in Shrewsbury and surrounding areas as at Wednesday morning - those that are open are shown in bold:

My fab LBS Dave Mellor Cycles in Frankwell is open, they have been selling lots of indoor trainers and new bikes.

The Trailhead, also in Frankwell, is open today Wed 25 March but closing at 4pm for a while. Updates on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/the_trailhead_bicycle_co/). BTW they were featured in a GMBN video recently - https://youtu.be/yg3vbpSeUFM

Trek Store (previously known as Stan's Cycles) on Wyle Cop closed on Monday (FB).

Phil at Urban Bikes in the market hall (FB) is now closed until 7 April but contactable for repairs.

Shrewsbury Cycles in Ditherington is open (FB).

Islabikes are open and have split their bicycle assembly across six sites while the office staff are working from home (FB statement).

Pearce Cycles in Ludlow are open (FB).

Plush Hill Cycles in Dawley, Telford is closed for social distancing but they are answering enquiries (FB).

Brooks Cycles in Welshpool is open but "for ESSENTIAL BIKE REPAIRS only" (FB).

I am not a fan of Facebook but it seems to be the main social media presence that most stores are using regularly.

Jakes Bikes in Bristol says

Quote:

The time has come for us all to do our bit and unfortunately that means we will be closed for a little while. This is the first time in 12 years we have had to close our doors and its not a decision we have taken lightly.

We are aware that bike shops have been given exemption from closure but we want to prioritize the health of our customers and staff, remaining opening just doesn’t feel right. In light of the latest data from countries such as Italy where the COVID-19 outbreak is a couple of weeks ahead of the UK, we feel it has become absolutely clear that businesses need to close and everyone except critical workers needs to stay at home. We feel the most socially responsible thing we can do now is to temporarily close the shop.

Bike Repairs for Critical Workers

We are still contactable by email on info [at] bristolbicycles.co.uk and we are offering an appointment service for critical workers’ travel needs, for example:

Frontline NHS staff
Delivery riders
Food retail staff

If you are a critical worker and you need an emergency bike repair to allow you to carry on working, please email info [at] bristolbicycles.co.uk and we will endeavour to arrange and appointment or a courtesy bike for you.

Bike shops are on the list of the essential services, so they'll be staying open

When did that happen ? They weren't on last night or early this morning (unless we want to classify then as "hardware stores"}. There is pressure from BC and CUK I believe, but not heard anything concrete regarding any outcome yet.
