At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Tortec Wall Mount Storage Hook is a clever little device that allows you to store your bike upright. The unit is pretty easy to install, just use the 4 screws and rawlplugs supplied and fit it to a wall. The hook is designed such that the holes for the screws are easily accessible.

In use, it works pretty well. While it's slightly trickier to get the bike on and off than some other storage hooks I've used, you quickly become used to the easiest angle to slide the front wheel in. While the lips on the sides don't make it easier to get the bike on, they do reduce how far the bike will swing sideways, which is a plus.

The packaging says it's designed for up to 35mm tyres for the road version (it also comes in a MTB version which will take wider tyres). While it works fine with 32mm Schwalbe Marathons, there is less room for manoeuvring - and it's therefore slightly trickier - than with skinnier tyres.

The hook itself has a rubber sleeve which protects your rim from getting scratched up. I quite like how the hook looks on my wall, you can tell someone's thought about it. These things tend to be quite utilitarian and the Tortec wall mount storage hook scores high here for me.

The only potential problem I could see is that the angled hook might start suffering from metal fatigue and break off eventually if you use it enough as there isn't a strut to support it. I'm pretty confident you'd have to go through a lot of hanging up and taking down before that would happen though. I tested it mostly with Ridgeback Flight 04 Alfine hub geared commuter bike which has enough gubbins on it to make it really quite heavy, and while there was some sag, I wasn't in any doubt the hook could handle it.

Verdict

A neat storage solution that is better designed than most.
