The jersey, as you'd imagine, is designed for summer use and warm weather. Not much of that in the UK, I hear you say. But we've had a few hot days, and those, along with a few trips to warmer climes, have allowed me to thoroughly put this jersey to the test. And I've been impressed. From the integrated baselayer to the quality of the fabrics, the high-quality construction, understated appearance and the race cut fit, it's a stellar jersey.

For someone who always wears a baselayer, even on hot rides, I was sceptical at first. But trusting in the company's assertion that it would 'give you the ultimate in summer performance', my hesitation proved unfounded. Not only is it comfortable against the skin, with no irritation noticeable anywhere inside the jersey, it really does work well in hot conditions and deals with excessive sweat well, helping to pull moisture away from your skin very effectively. And because you're not wearing a baselayer, you have less material between your skin and the air, and the result is a more comfortable ride.

Constructed from the company's own type.002 material, the jersey has a skinFoil mesh lining inside the front panels, while a simple mesh back panel made from the type.220 light material allows heat to escape. The main fabric has a soft texture and it's slightly compressive, which enhances the fit.

Talking of which, the fit is very much a race cut, but it's comfortable with it, especially around the shoulders. That's down to the seamless arm and collar design that provides a smooth and irritation-free fit around the shoulders and neck.

For carting around all the food and tools you need, you get three regular sized pockets and an extra zipped pocket, which gets an extra review mark from me as someone who likes a safe place to store the house keys.

Compared with Assos jerseys of yesteryear, it's understated but – to my mind – a stylish and good looking design. Yes, it's black, but Assos has built in some reflective details on the back to ensure you have extra visibility on those late evening rides. There are a couple of different colours available too, though a few more options wouldn't go amiss for those who like to coordinate their outfits.

What price for high performance? Assos has always been a company associated as much with its premium prices as its high-quality construction, fit, and function, and at £170 this is one of the most expensive jerseys road.cc has ever tested (Rapha's Pro Team Shadow is another £50, though that has water resistance as part of its appeal). But it's worth remembering that you're effectively buying a jersey and baselayer, which perhaps helps to make the price tag a little easier to digest.
