At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

On The Rivet Chamois Cream is a UK-produced anti-bacterial concoction that's made from 100 per cent natural ingredients, enriched with sweet almond oil and free from both smell and tingle, all of which is nice, and it works.

If you didn't know, 'on the rivet' is a somewhat outdated term used to signify maximum effort, a relic from the olden days when road saddles were leather and attached to the rails with big brass rivets, and if a rider was trying hard they'd naturally slide forward on the saddle onto the nose rivet. Modern day Brooks saddle riders will be aware of this. Yes, I am padding out this review because there's not much to say about On The Rivet Chamois Cream other than: it just works.

On The Rivet comes in a bountiful 200ml pot (made from recycled plastic) that should last you a long time, depending on how much you feel the need to finger out and slather, of course, and at a hair under a tenner it works out as cracking good value compared with some chamois creams.

The only standout ingredient in this 100 per cent natural salve is the sweet almond oil. Enriched with vitamins E and A, it's claimed to be beneficial to the skin, softening, nourishing and able to combat skin rashes – all things you could consider beneficial in a cream you're daubing somewhere delicate.

On The Rivet Chamois Cream has the look, smell and feel of a thick moisturiser or face cream, which is no bad thing if you're put off by the tacky and greasy reputation of a chamois cream. It goes on easily too and absorbs well without any lingering sticky feeling or tingle that other undercarriage unguents might surprise you with.

Once applied it's unobtrusive on a ride and just seems to do its job, no fuss. It was dabbed on for everything from short blasts to long all-day rides and there's absolutely nothing to report, and that's said as a good thing. It just did what it was supposed to do, adding a bit of ride-long lubricating comfort downstairs, and it didn't stop working after a few sweaty hours like some I've tried.

Verdict

Fragrance-free, non-tingly, UK-made chamois cream that just does what it's supposed to

Jo Burt has spent the majority of his life riding bikes, drawing bikes and writing about bikes. When he's not scribbling pictures for the whole gamut of cycling media he writes words about them for road.cc and when he's not doing either of those he's pedaling. Then in whatever spare minutes there are in between he's agonizing over getting his socks, cycling cap and bar-tape to coordinate just so.
