At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Grime Boss Heavy Duty Hand Wipes get oil and grease off your hands almost instantly, and we've found them pretty good for quickly cleaning a bike chain after a ride too.

What you get here is a re-sealable pouch of 60 large wipes (205 x 255mm). They're moist, like wet wipes, with one rough side and one smooth side.

Get dirt, oil or grease on your hands when you're doing some bike cleaning or maintenance and these will remove it fast. They're really effective. A quick wipe, maybe a rub, and you're done. Your hands dry in a few seconds without the need for a towel.

They smell okay too: citrussy. A bit 'car-freshener', maybe, but nothing offensive. There's some aloe vera and vitamin E in there to help protect and moisturise your skin. I certainly didn't have any problems on that front and your hands don't feel greasy after use.

Although these are clearly billed as 'heavy duty hand wipes', I've used them for quickly wiping off the chain after rides too. I'm not sure that the chain manufacturers would recommend it, but it seems to work fine.

They're no substitute for getting into the links with a stiff brush and degreaser, but they'll get rid of gunk on the surface. You know when you clean and lube your chain, then go out and dust and grime and stuff sticks to the lube and turns it black? It'll get rid of a lot of that if you don't want to (or are unable to) do another full cleaning of the chain.

Like I say, that's not the recommended use, but I've been doing it and the chain has been fine. Someone will probably give a good reason why you shouldn't do this, but it has worked for me. It's a real-world quick fix. Obviously, you have to re-lube afterwards.

These are available in Homebase. As well as this 60-wipe versionfor £8.99, you can get 10 for £2.99, and 30 for £4.99.

Verdict

Moist wipes that get oil and grease off your hands in seconds.

Do baby wipes get the black grease off your hands after a road side puncture repair involving wrestling with the chain to get the wheel off/on? If so then I might get a few wipes and stick them in a ziplock bag and add that to my roadside repair kit.

Same here, I've in the past jokingly suggested to the Mrs about rebranding baby wipes as bike wipes and selling them at a markup. Looks like someone else had the same idea...

+1 for Pampers active baby wipes.

Since I discovered these having had kids we're never without them. Get muck out of anything and a hell of a lot cheaper

Are they any better than a £1 packet of baby wipes?
