At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The more we ride the harder it can be to maintain a clean bill of health. The body can struggle to keep everything in balance as the demands placed on it get tougher or the more you push your limits. Joints can suffer due to the extra workload or pressure of riding in all sorts of conditions. Nordic Oil High Grade Omega 3 is claimed to help.

Nordic Oil say this lemon-flavoured oil is packed with essential fatty acids that are crucial for the body's continued health. However, I have struggled to get used to it and it has been difficult to identify a long or short term benefit. It hasn't had an adverse effect, though. It's easy on the stomach but not so good on the palate.

The Omega 3s here come from fish including cold-water anchovies, herrings and sardines. They are then triple filtered and infused with anti-oxidants, to maintain maximum purity and freshness. It is also free from artificial colouring or flavours.

At £15.99 for 250ml it is pricier than other products including capsules which provide similar claimed benefits. James Slade the founder and creator of Nordic Oil says it's the best product on the market. He may well be right but the taste will still not be to everyone's liking.

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

For all athletes looking to boost the body's fight against stress, inflammation of joints and generally give your immune system a kick start. Without any quantifiable controls it is difficult to assess the full benefit of the Nordic Oil. However, can you not try something that will boost your body's fight against training loads?

Rate the product for performance:

8/10

The potential benefits are huge, certainly at this time of year. Your body is under pressure potentially through a long year but additionally due to worsening conditions so if the Nordic Oil can provide some assistance then it would be a winner.

Rate the product for value:

6/10

At £15.99, Nordic Oil is on the expensive side. The taste will not sit well with everyone and then there is the question of how you measure the positives?

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

This is the difficult measure. You know how well you feel, psychologically and in your training but is it due to the Nordic Oil or other elements of your diet or training regime?

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

The taste. There is no getting away from it, this is an acquired taste.

Did you enjoy using the product? I have to say it was a struggle, even with just 5ml a day.

Would you consider buying the product? I like the idea of health benefits being in small easy spoonful taken daily but there must be an easier way for the palate to cope with it.

Would you recommend the product to a friend? I would but would have to warn them of the taste.

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

Nordic Oil pack a lot into the bottle but it's not easy to swallow. It's a little like Marmite,

Overall rating: 7/10

As a vegetarian I have not consumed any meat or fish since 1982. I've cycled over 55,000 miles in my life so far.

Forget it. You don't need any of this rubbish.

Q " How can you find out if someone is a vegetarian?"

A " You don't have to find out, they will always find a way to tell you!"

i drink cod liver oil every day - Tesco 1.99 for around 300ml. Why pay more?

Knock it back like a shot or pour it into orange juice. It won't mix completely (just like oil and water) but it will help.

+1 on the Obree method.

Years of being administered Cod Liver Oil as a child has resulted in an aversion to any kind of bottled fish related substance, but Good Luck...

Ditch the bottled oil and follow Graham Obree's advice - sardines on toast. Absolutely packed with omega oils and protein, plus a few carbs. For the record, a tin of sardines costs about 45p from Aldi, or (my personal favourite) 85p for Waitrose's luxury picante ones.
