Garmin 830 vs wahoo roam

Noticing more people on my club ride switching from Garmin to Wahoo. I have an Elemnt Bolt - not a single problem in 2 years. Anecdotally, several of the Garmin owners have been frustrated with (tech-related!) crashes or update issues.

I come from edge 705, mio cyclo 505, edge 810 and edge 520. This may i upgraded to 830.

The upgrade over 520 is big, it is very fast and very power efficient. A 8h ride with hrm, power meter, di2 wireless unit plus 5h of varia radar doesnt make the battery go below 65%.

The touch screen is capacitive and doesn't lag, works well with water but don't use it much as I swipe screen with di2 shifters, but touch screen is very convenient for mapping and menus.

It has cool mtb metrics.

You can select wich notifications you want from the phone, earlier only SMS/calls/telegram were allowed. Now it also has suspend function, it hardly uses any battery from day to day and turns on instantly.

About the wahoo no idea, I was about to switch to wahoo but not being able to use varia radar (open standard) and the new feature set from 830 convinced me.

I thought the 530 is garmins version of the Roam not the 830? But as people has said they are just too new to tell what is best. I have always had a gamin and it has never once missed a ride or had an issue. On a side note I also think you might get more bad reviews of garmin online as they have simply sold more units and have been the market leader for so long.

Both are very new, so having extensive knowledge both of both is asking a lot.

But based on previous experiences of brands, it's simple... Wahoo.

As a recent first time GPS bike computer user I went for the Bolt (Roam has come along subsequently) and very happy with it.  I plan routes in Komoot and then sync that with the Bolt (Bolt and smartphone need to be connected to WiFi to achieve this).  The only challenging scenario I can forsee is an 'ad-lib' route (ie unplanned) in an area I'm unfamiliar with; the Bolt black and white map isn't that clear.  There is a 'take me to' function through the smartphone app so, in conjunction with an OS map on the phone, I'd just make it up as I went along; it normally keeps you clear of busy A roads but takes the shortest route.  Route planning on Komoot is dead easy so it's worth spending time planning rather than rushing out on the bike and making it up.  I think the Roam gets you back on your route if you deviate from it and the maps are colour which would help if you're making up a ride as you go along in unfamiliar territory; otherwise the functionality is the same as the Bolt.  The Bolt setting up was very easy and it 'just works'.  I've added a speed sensor (fitted on the hub) and it took about a minute to set up.  If I was buying now I'd certainly give the Roam some serious thought even though it's more expensive than the Bolt.

Another happy wahoo user here, mine took 10 mins to set up, and has never missed a beat since, including one 9 hour ride for the cinglés. In answer to which is best, I spent a lot of time getting feedback and reading reviews on garmin and wahoo, and came to the conclusion that either would meet my needs, both have more capability than I will ever use, and then it's down to personal taste. I went for the Bolt largely due to its compact size.

I'm a happy Wahoo user, all the negative reports put off of a Garmin, my Bolt's been excellent from day one. You will find excellent, impartial, reviews of both companies' offerings on DC Rainmaker's site.
