Video: wrong-way rider meets jay-walker

Two wrongs make a bit of a chuckle

They say two wrongs don’t make a right, but in this video we can see that if you’re both in the wrong the least you can do is both jovially admit it, pick yourselves up and go about your business.

We’ve no idea who the rider and pedestrian are in this clip, but we think you’ll agree the pedestrian deserves a medal for being surprisingly pleasant about being knocked on his arse, and at least an 8/10 for his rolling fall.

For the record, road.cc does not condone riding the wrong way unless you’re going to be a lot more careful than this bloke was.

Oh, and yes, we know it's a bit old, but it still made us smile.

John has been writing about bikes and cycling for over 30 years since discovering that people were mug enough to pay him for it rather than expecting him to do an honest day's work.

He was heavily involved in the mountain bike boom of the late 1980s as a racer, team manager and race promoter, and that led to writing for Mountain Biking UK magazine shortly after its inception. He got the gig by phoning up the editor and telling him the magazine was rubbish and he could do better. Rather than telling him to get lost, MBUK editor Tym Manley called John’s bluff and the rest is history.

Since then he has worked on MTB Pro magazine and was editor of Maximum Mountain Bike and Australian Mountain Bike magazines, before switching to the web in 2000 to work for CyclingNews.com. Along with road.cc founder Tony Farrelly, John was on the launch team for BikeRadar.com and subsequently became editor in chief of Future Publishing’s group of cycling magazines and websites, including Cycling Plus, MBUK, What Mountain Bike and Procycling.

John has also written for Cyclist magazine, edited the BikeMagic website and was founding editor of TotalWomensCycling.com before handing over to someone far more representative of the site's main audience.

He joined road.cc in 2013. He lives in Cambridge where the lack of hills is more than made up for by the headwinds.

A cyclist can definitely be fully in the wrong - did you see those hideous Carrera denim lookalike cycling outfits in the 80s?

So can a cyclist never be fully in the wrong then, Road cc? Blame is NOT 50/50, it's a one way street! Pedestrian shouldn't have to look left here. Cyclists fault. End of.

funny thing is that you should look both ways because there are often cyclists doing something stupid.

Poor pedestrian 2
He wasn't using the cross walk, another silly rule from the USA.

Would have been a very expensive court case if one of them was seriously hurt.

From my European perspective the cyclist was wrong wrong wrong.

Good to see nobody was hurt badly.

Luckily the ped was a Weebl, all those lunches came in handy finally.

Meanwhile [exhales] the biker... well lets just say that karma is a slow but inevitable enemy; defy him too often and his revenge will be swift and terrible.

What i find odd is the Idiot on a bike (not a cyclist) videoed himself riding like a d**k. And then posted it.

Pr*ckster is going the wrong way. Fair enough.
But going the wrong way with a waned attention span, F that.

The suit tumbles around on the road like a ball literally.

It constantly amazes me, while cycling in Soho, London, how many peds just walk along in the middle of the roads, oblivious to their surroundings, then are really surprised when you pass them. I often wonder how they got to the age they are with any road sense at all

Come ON guys, where is the cry from your community to have pointless nonsense like this on the site? Are you on commission for the Daily Mail? Is there a need to balance the acres of shit driving with a few select 'look cyclists are bad people too' pieces?

Or is it good for ad revenue?

Genuinely confused. Please stop.

How cool was the guy that was knocked over. Landed on his arse, got up and casual as you like wandered off. Cyclist was a cock though.

^^^ that with bells on.

And don't even get me started on all this "cycling community" and "cycling lobby" guff I keep seeing in the newspapers.

That cyclist is a prat. Anyone who considers me a prat because he is a prat, is themselves a prat.

Cyclist 100% in the wrong. Bizarre behaviour. Very lucky the pedestrian was so forgiving.

Who cares if the pedestrian wasn't "using the crosswalk" (well, maybe they do in the US where they have those daft 'jaywalking' laws, but I believe those were, ironically enough, in the context of this video, introduced at the behest of the car industry to shift blame for accidents off of drivers)

(as HKCambridge says, I thought this was going to be one of those little low-traffic one-way roads that probably ought to be bollarded off anyway, but this is just ridiculous)

The cyclist actually had plenty of time to brake or take avoiding action when the pedestrian appeared ... but he appeared to be looking downwards at a piece of paper instead. All this whilst cycling in the 'door zone' too. Quadruple fail.

That's not in the least bit funny, the cyclist is 100% (actually 110%) the type of C-bomb that's giving us a bad name the world over. A classic case of someone insufficiently bullied whilst still at school.

Why is it that when one idiot does something on a bike, it "gives us a bad name"? That's such a BS cliche statement…. If you follow that through, then every time a car driver does something stupid, it gives all car drivers a bad name… Every time a pedestrian does something stupid, it gives pedestrians a band name…. Every time anyone does anything stupid, it give everyone else a bad name… Do see what utter nonsense that is?! 29

The problem is, it isn't just one cyclist that gets us all a bad name; it's lots of them. Where I live, anyway.

A lot of people cannot seem to grasp that collective responsibility doesn't exist.

Um, wow. When you said one-way street I was imaging some kind of little side-street that's too narrow for more than one car to pass. The kind of place I'd roll my eyes at a wrong-way cyclist, but essentially consider it harmless. The kind of place I'd always look two ways before crossing the road, because I expect salmoning cyclists. And joggers, and wheelchairs and anything that's actually allowed to use the street two-way.

This is a whole 'nother ball game. Wrong way cycling down a THREE LANE road. The guy is an arse. But if he's going to be an arse he needs to be extra alert and shouldn't have hit the pedestrian.

Although I will admit to more partiality on the side of the pedestrian anyway, because jaywalking laws are a hideous travesty: a mark of lost civilisation where using your feet is frowned upon.

That's so romantically put! I swooned a little...

Anyway, I'm also awfully glad we haven't criminalised jaywalking in this country. It seems barbaric assault on normal, unaugmented people's rights. And the history behind its introduction seems pretty corporately manipulative too.

Any why would the ped have looked left when crossing a one-way street?

Quite right. Having said that I taught my son to look both ways even when traffic shouldn't be coming from one of the directions. Shouldn't be doesn't mean can't be.

Cyclist is in the wrong. Pedestrian in this case is a victim. But I would urge people to look both ways even if they aren't expecting anything to be there.

I always look both ways, even when crossing a pedestrian zone, ever since my first visit to Italy. The Aitais are, in the words of my Italian brother in law, "flexible" when it comes to road rules, so I always play it safe, even at home.
