Halfords is offering 10% off its new bikes and accessories to those who trade in their old bikes between 14-19 April.
As part of what Halfords describes as the UK’s biggest bike trade-in event, bikes brought in will be sent to Africa via bicycle recycling charity Re~Cycle, where they will help rural people access anything from water and firewood to healthcare and education.
Donated bikes brought in to any Halfords between Thursday 14 and Tuesday 19 April will be recycled, so long as their frames have less than 25% rust and are crack free.
Chris Boardman backs Re~Cycle charity
Last year Re~Cycle sent 12,317 bicycles to six countries in Africa and since it began in 1997, it has shipped almost 75,000. The charity estimates millions of bikes are thrown away in Britain, or lie unused in sheds, while many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind.
Earlier this year Chris Boardman voiced his support for the Re~Cycle, saying refurbishing bikes for people who may have no other form of transport was ‘a no-brainer’.
He said: “In the UK having a bike is fashionable. Cycling is a trendy thing to do. In Europe bikes are very functional, people ride them in normal clothes — you don’t see ‘cyclists’. But worldwide, it is the poor people’s transport; it’s how you get around. For some people it’s a choice but for others it’s a genuine means to get to work, to a school, hospital or clean water — their only means.”
“Bikes have a huge life span and can do an awful lot for people,” said Boardman.
As Re~Cycle puts it: “Transport and development go hand-in-hand. Virtually everything traded, must be transported, and almost everyone needs wheels to get to work or school. Simple, affordable transport generates income opportunities in developing countries, as well as saving lots of time and back-breaking work.”
