Video: Driver breaks law to film cyclists riding legally - then posts footage online

Facebook footage and account deleted after social media backlash regarding incident in SW London

A motorist in Roehampton, south west London branded a group of cyclists who were riding quite legally on the road “Saturday w*nk*rs” for not using a shared-use path – while illegally filming them from a handheld mobile phone while driving.

The driver, Andrew Cudd, posted the video to Facebook but deleted it – and his account – after social media users, some of whom had copied the footage and reposted it, reported it to the Metropolitan Police.

YouTube user Dr Morocho posted a video including the original footage that also shows how the situation escalated via social media.

The motorist gave a running commentary as he passed cyclists using the road rather than the shared-use path, beeping his horn then confronting a group of riders waiting at a traffic light.

“What’s wrong with the cycle lane?” he asked them. “Why don’t you use the cycle lane that’s provided?”

The original video, posted to Facebook on Friday, had amassed more than half a million views by the time it was deleted.

In a post on its website, Richmond Cycling Campaign pointed out that besides the illegal use of a handheld phone while at the wheel, Mr Cudd had also passed some of the cyclists too closely.

Both issues have received prominent coverage in the national press last week, with calls to increase penalties for using a handheld device at the wheel and West Midlands Police confirming it will prosecute drivers who carry out close passes.

“We’re asking the Roehampton Safer Neighbourhoods Team to investigate this video, and others have asked Roadsafe to do the same.

“Not only is Mr Cudd wrong in a number of his assertions, but what appear to be a number of close passes, and his clear admission to be using his mobile phone while driving should surely result in some police attention.

“We want the roads in our area to be safe for everyone, however they’re getting around, and whatever they choose to wear – no-one should be exposed to danger or poor road behaviour like this.”

The footage was filmed on Priory Lane, a popular route with cyclists heading to or from Richmond Park via Roehampton Gate, and scene of two other videos that have gone viral in the past 18 months.

In March last year, café owner Jason Wells unleashed a tirade of abuse on a cyclist he believed should be using the cycle path, and was fined for a public order offence as a result of the incident.

> Local paper identifies extreme road rage driver as SW London cafe chain owner

In July, the Metropolitan Police were called to an incident on the same road after a motorist was alleged to have deliberately tried to knock cyclists off their bikes, causing two to fall off, and his car’s passengers subsequently becoming involved in an altercation with other riders.

Last time I was there (late in the evening) I stuck to the (rubbish) shared-use path, because I fear the kind of drivers who seem to use that road. Only to find it blocked by a car parked on it.

Not only is he holding his phone in his hand while driving, but if you think about it, to sound his horn he will have had to have taken his other and off the wheel - so not only driving too close but doing so no handed.

I can sound my horn without losing contact with my steering wheel. If the horn is stalk mounted you can also sound the horn without losing contact with the steering wheel.

But that still doesn't take away from the fact that the driver is still a twat.

I read too often road rage against cyclist where the rager is ignorant of road laws. Often not he/she feels they're in the right and cyclist/s in the wrong. Why isn't the British government doing a better job at educating drivers - TV ads? Even local media print can assist by explaining road rules, right of ways, etc. Education goes a long way in preventing unecessary injury.

That shared use lane on Priory lane is useless, it's too narrow and vanishes by the Bank of England Sports Club (there is some back streets route it's meant to link to.

I had a white van man screaming at me two thursdays ago as I was cycling on the road, sounded like he was about to gove himself a heart attack. Happens quite often along there.

Priory lane gets used as a rat run by cars northbound to avoid congestion at the bottom of Roehampton lane, and southbound from the south circular to avoid the one way system to turn right coming eastbound on the south circular. It has far too much motor traffic on what is a narrow residential road.

Wandsworth council are looking at removing the on-path cycle path widening the road to put cycle lanes on the woder road and making it a 20mph zone (as the rest of the borough will be) with speed bumps along to slow the speeding cars.

https://democracy.wandsworth.gov.uk/documents/s44325/16-251%20Priory%20L...

This is better than the current situation, but not ideal. They need to stop the rat running traffic, which causes most of the problems.

So do you go against the traffic or round the roundabout? Either = the scene of the accident; compared to just staying on the road. (Photo didn't follow with quote, see above a few posts)

Clearly this is a poor cycle lane added by a council with no money. I was offered this similarly useless cycle lane near Castleford on my commute

//road.cc/sites/default/files/cycle%20lane%20from%202016-09-21%2014%3A55%3A25.png)

Fortuntaley we are starting to get dedicated cycle lanes now in Leeds

//res.cloudinary.com/jpress/image/fetch/w_620,f_auto,ar_3:2,c_fill/http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/webimage/1.7916926.1463506049!/image/image.jpg)

I personally don't like it when cyclists don't use dedicated cycle lanes but if the lane is not fit for purpose, it's understandable that they use the road.

(Attachement:)

I used to put pedal to the metal down Priory. Overtake me and you're probably speeding (no superman here - it's quite short). Could be a 20 limit if not already, that would help (for a change), but not been there/Richmond Park in ages. I like a bit of space on the road, me.

And yes, the thing to the left is the usual painted pavement masquerading as a cycle lane.

I made the mistake of looking for posts by him on youtube, and he really is possibly the most stupid arrogant twat ever.  In this vid, he makes David Brent look like a kind compassionate human being.  I'm not sure that he doesn't model his behaviour on Brent, apart from the fact that he is abusive, insulting and foul-mouthed.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIdDx4A7D_0

If he doesn't get prosecuted for mobile driving and dangerous driving, I'll happily chuck the CDF fifty quid to start a fund to prosecute him privately.  People like this shouldn't be allowed out, let alone given a driving licence.

I hate Priory Lane. The cycle path (shared use footpath) is completely unfit for purpose so cyclists, quite legally, use the highway and as it goes to probably the most popular road cycling destination in London, it gets thousands of users.

I've had at least 2 altercations down there. One from a van driver who screamed past us, slammed the brakes on and his passenger got out yelling abuse about how we should be using the cycle path. Another less serious one where we simply had some lip from a driver as he passed and then immediately got held up at the lights.

They need to completely remove the path and it would do away with all those incidents. Classic case of shit infrastructure actually endangering the very people it was supposed to protect. Even if you use it it's still dangerous as it crosses loads of driveways and junctions.

I hate Priory Lane too. I avoid it now, after too many unpleasant incidents.

Coming from Castlenau/Hammersmith direction, I prefer to go slightly out of my way and run the gauntlet of railway crossings at Barnes High Street/Mortlake - if the crossing is shut at Barnes, it's usually open at Mortlake, and there's restricted access roads running along both sides.

This also cuts out the stretch of Upper Richmond Road with a disappearing bike lane.

no, they need to completely rebuild it to Dutch standards and make it so that it has priority over those side streets and also goes across them on a table so motons have to slow down for it...

Looks like Mr Cudd could amass at least 6 penalty points and, if the close passing initiative just launched by West Midlands Police had been in operation here, probably a prosecution, too, for repeat offending.

o be fair though, that's actually not a bad looking cyclelane... BUT I'm sure there's a reason why it's not fit for purpose... like ending in a phonebox or something.

I rode down there two weeks ago. I noticed the shared use path cycle lane half way down the road. So it is really not clear where it starts from or goes to. It was also totally unsuitable to cycle on safely at any speed.  The council probably managed to tick some boxes out of it. White paint is also cheap.

It's got driveways intersecting it every 30m plus a number of side roads from the left every 100m or so. That makes cycling on the cycle path rather dangerous as the local drivers can't be trusted to look first before crossing the cycle path. At least when you're cycling on Priory Lane there's no argument about who's got the right of way.

That cycle path is not fit for purpose they either need to redo it or just get rid of it all together.

That said it does give some protection from the vehicles that often speed down Priory lane, this seems to be particularly bad in the evening rush hour. A cyclist will get killed one of these days on that road.

Land Rovers are iconic, and cool. It distresses me to see one suffering in captivity (on a paved road). They belong in fields or out on the savanah, not in the hands of morons.
