Breaking News: Several cyclists injured, two critically, as driver crashes into bike race in Berlin

One rider reported to be fighting for their life after incident on Sunday morning

A cyclist is fighting for their life and another sustained serious injuries after a motorist reportedly crashed into a bike race in the German capital, Berlin.

Two other riders were said to have been slightly injured in the incident , which happened at around 12.45pm on Sunday, reports The Mirror.

The race, held on open roads, is organised by Germany's second oldest  cycling club, the Radsport Club Charlottenburg.

Full details of the incident, which happened in the Nikolskoer Weg district of the city, are yet to emerge.

It is an unfortunate truth that there are complete idiots in this world, but it is not mandated that the world must give them a platform from which to babble.

-----------------------------------------------

It is most unfortunate that the race took a turn for the worse and I hope that the injured recover fully.

I don't know what the rules for marshalling are in Germany, but in the UK one can only advise and suggest, which means that you get some idiots who decide that their agenda is more important than the welfare of others and disregard the marshalls.

It pleases me to think that they're rushing to get home before their blubber melts and stains their seat.

Wow, this comments section took an unexpected turn....didn't see that coming.

I think I will mainly think about the poor cyclists involved in this accident.

Yep, two comments that went off at a tangent trying to make points (poorly) that were basically irrelevant to the article. This incident appears to have been caused by blundering on the part of the stewards and police. Let's hope the injured cyclists recover and can get some compensation for a crash that doesn't appear to have been their fault.

The US has basically tried to turn every smart device into a spying tool, with some collusion it also seems. Nothing is beyond them given the human price already paid in places like Iraq since George and Tony went looking for fake WMD. They made up an encounter to start the Vietnam war as well.

The US isn't some benign entity its a hornet's nest poker that does its poking with the same stick it stirred the shit with.

God knows what will happen now there's a complete idiot at the helm.

German papers are now saying that the cyclists crashed into a stopped car after a corner.
It's not clear why the car was there.

Looks like a race steward waved the car through, then it got stopped by a policeman just before the cyclists arrived.
Two crashed into the rear of the car and one managed to avoid the car and collided with a steward. All four were brought to a hospital.

Huuurrh, I was reading this headline with a heavy heart and trepidation. If this is indeed an accident (human error) involving a car it won't be the first. But it could have been worse; I was imagining a Nice truck attack style situation, a terrorist attack like London this week but on cyclists. I can see why the Boston Marathon was targeted by bombers. Big events like Ride London could be uniquely vulnerable to motor attacks.
