Near Miss of the Day 10: This is not just any close pass - this is a Marks & Spencer close pass

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country – today it’s Staines-upon-Thames

The latest video in our Near Miss of the Day feature shows a lorry driver making a close pass on a cyclist - and it's not just any close pass either, it's a Marks & Spencer close pass, whose livery adorns the tractor unit and trailer involved.

It happened this morning on the A30 London Road in Staines-upon-Thames and was filmed by cyclist Toby Evans, who told us that he had sent a link to the footage to both Marks & Spencer and Gist, the fleet contractor that operates the vehicle.

He has also submitted it to Surrey Police, and said: "I think they're a bit keener than my local force Thames Valley - let's see."

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or contact us via the road.cc Facebook page.

A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Surrey have sent through the paperwork. I have to submit a hard copy of the video , eg DVD or USB stick

so, I was out with the lad training this morning on our home roads, and this happened:

same sort of thing, smaller vehicle with plates, but much faster and a child put at risk

I've reported it to Thames Valley Police - lets see how they compare to Surrey

Yes. Yours was at least at a slow speed.

But you ought to sort the horizon out on your camera. It looks like you are about to fall off

Thanks for sharing, but can we keep to some standards such as wiping the water from the camera lens for greater clarity.

my son was highly impressed with the effing and jeffing directed towards the John Lewis partnership in that clip. I'm impressed with the clear fact that whatever the human activity, everyone else has to go one better "you think yours was close, mine was waaaay closer ..."

ok, so Surrey Police have just been on the blower. They are sending me a set of forms, I think it's a "complaint of bad driving" or something, and have asked me if I would be prepared to attend court if necessary, and to keep the youtube clip live

This put Surrey Police way ahead of my local plod, Thames Valley, already, who literally do not care how close, how fast, even if there are kids being cut up ....

Apologies all round for poor angle, water interference and colourful language.
