Continued, because I can't find an edit button!
I see that a battery adds another £900.
However, I also see that Decathlon sells utilitarian e-bikes for £750 to 1,500 What would it take to persuade Decathlon (or Aldi) to commission an e-cargo bike?

It's another great long john at a price that puts it out of reach of the people that need it.
The Maxon motor alone costs £1,500. Someone needs to apply motor car manufacturing technology to e-cargo bikes. Sell them with accesories for under a grand and people will start to take them seriously as alternatives to cars and vans for doing the shopping*, going surfing, taking the dog to the vet, etc.
*and shops will use them to deliver goods to you.
I love, and I'm lucky to ride, hand built bikes, but they aren't going to save the planet!
