Near Miss of the Day 504: A textbook left hook attempt

Video contains strong language

Today’s near miss involves a quite jaw-droppingly unnecessary manoeuvre from a motorist to deliver a near textbook left hook attempt.

Toby was riding on the A428 near Long Lawford, heading into Rugby, out for his daily lockdown ride.

“It’s normally at lunchtime but it got delayed a little due to overrunning meetings,” he said. “Thankfully I’d got plenty of decent lights going from all the pre-lockdown commuting.

“I was aware of the car behind me as I was approaching the junction and could see the other car waiting as I approached. The moment I saw it start pulling out while I heard the car behind start overtaking me, I knew something bad was about to happen so I started braking.

“I’m so glad I did. It would have been a nasty left hook if my spidey-sense hadn’t gone off.

Toby has submitted the video to Warwickshire police.

“Hopefully I’ll receive a response, but I don’t expect much – I’ve never heard from them before.”

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Thats a hatrick of stupidity right there.  Double white lines, oncoming traffic and a left hook for dessert.  What a muppet.

Another NaOiL, hot off the press. Good to see that Lancashire learners are starting as they mean to go on. Both of them went through on red.

They are not necessarily learners.  They could be on 125cc bikes having passed their CBT but not passed a full bike test required for more powerful bikes.

Anyone with L-plates is a learner in any sense that I need to concern myself with

Passing your CBT doesn't stop you being a learner, it's what you need to ride a 125 on a learner licence.

If you have a full driving license, passing a CBT is all you need to ride a motorcycle or scooter of up to 125cc. They will have done this. If you consider them to be learners still that's fair enough; I tend to think this too but legally it's not that straightforward. They are not necessarily learners in legal terms nor in terms of experience. An L plate on motorcycle is not quite the same as one on a car. I wouldn't excuse poor motorcycling with an L plate thinking they are a learner - they might well not be.

A provisional licence holder has to pass their CBT in order to ride on the road, they are classed as learners until they pass their test so your comment is inaccurate and false.

They have to wear L plates but can keep then on indefinitely, just renewing the CBT when it's up. There's no necessity to pass a motorcycle test unless they want to use a more powerful vehicle or want to remove the L plates as they find them annoying; they've passed the test that makes them safe for the road.  So of course they might be classed as learners in one sense, but they are not necessarily learners too (which was the only point I made) - they could have been driving motorbikes of various types, 125cc and under for years.  I take your point but mine is definitely not inaccuate or false.

You see a hell of a lot of people driving through these lights on red. You should send all the footage to Lancs Police. Oh hang on.........I forgot that they don't give a fuck.

I try to avoid these lights, preferring to either go through Garstang or Nateby. Much better than the A6.

I only use them to get on to the Cockerham road, which was where I was going when an A6 southbound driver crashed through the lights at about 70 just in front of me. That's why I'm standing there on the pavement filming the routine disregard of red lights.

I'm nonplussed at the PCC response to be honest, given "The core functions of police and crime commissioners are to secure the maintenance of an efficient and effective police force within their area". Strikes me as a completely pointless and ineffective department if they just pass the buck. Hopefully they'll get scrapped.

PCC is just an expensive additional police department on a different site, which does indeed just pass the buck back to the police.

In Lancashire this certainly wouldn't get any response at all. I know because there never is, which is in turn because illegal crossing of double unbroken white lines has long been in Lancashire Constabulary's NaOiL List : Not an Offence in Lancashire, along with close-passing (never been prosecuted by LC), red light crossing, mobile phone use etc. I have loads of these:

Have you contacted Clive Grunshaw, the Labour appointed PCC of Lancashire?

This is the last letter from the LPCC, dated 22.3.19:

Thank you for your email dated the 21st March 2019.

Unfortunately it does not fall within the Police and Crime Commissioner's remit to investigate operational policing matters. Therefore, as you have expressed dissatisfaction with Lancashire Constabulary's response to road offences, I will need to share your email with the Professional Standards Department to look into. Please can you confirm that you are happy for me to share this information and for an officer to make contact with you directly?

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards
Amy Robertson

Business Support Admin Assistant
Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire

I had, of course, already gone through months of delay and 'working to rule' by the hilariously useless LC Professional Standards Department, who would not say Boo! to a goose, never mind a police officer. Don't believe everything you see on The Bay!

It's nice to see that for all the other stuff the commissioner had to do he has an Office, a Business Support Team within it, and an Admin Assistant within that.

How much money goes on these people whose remit does not include actually doing anything about the standards of policing?

Are they in fact there to ensure that the quality of crime is high?

Yeah Clive has done well for himself. Not bad for a former milkman.

Professional Standards Dept are useless too. I have only complained to them once. They didn't bother to reply.

The only people who drive Fiat 500s are usually young girls with really angry eyebrows, puffy lips and 'Big Hair'. The wannabe celebrity clone look. And they're invariably called Aimee, or some other similar name.

Awesome cars, particularly the Abarths & the 900cc TwinAirs. Modern Alfa Junior if you squint hard enough. Basically a Ford Ka underneath the Italian styling.

Sorry biker phil, but that's judgemental nonsensical stereotyping, wasn't worth your while making such a stupid comment.

In my experience the person I described drives Fiat 500s in my area. So my comment is not 'judgemental nonsensical stereotyping.' That sentence of yours is the stupid comment.

Your experience is as valuable as those who tell us that cyclists break read lights, don't know the HWC yada yada.
This is straight up confirmation bias, unless of course you have recorded verifiable data....

How do you break a read light?

I classify left hookers into two groups, those that overtake you then forget that you exist the moment they get past you.

This one is group two - the chancer, he knew exactly what he was doing but couldn't give a toss.

Doesn't do many miles - last MOT was July with 13,000 miles on the clock. So likely to be retired/second car/household duties

Must be the season for it. I've had a few at flared roundabouts entries lately when they've hooked or turned right after swerving into me. It really frustrating (equally pointless)as a cyclists goes through the roundabouts faster than them 2

Utterly ridiculous. Worth paying for a private NIP on that one if the police don't pull their finger out. I'm guessing the source footage is clearer and you've got the plate? Looks like a residential area, worth doing a bit of driveway surfing to find the address?
