Near Miss of the Day 776: Cyclist gets punishment pass from driver he passed in traffic queue
A cyclist who passed a driver who was queuing in traffic subsequently got a punishment pass from the same motorist, shown in today’s video in our Near Miss of the Day series.
The rider on the receiving end was road.cc reader Kionne, who lives in the West Midlands.
“The reason for the punishment pass is further back down the road I overtook a line of stationary traffic that this person was in,” he told us.
“Throughout the video clip my speed was exactly 30mph and the speed limit for the road was 30mph,” he added – and while speed limits of course do not apply to cyclists, that does demonstrate that the driver would have been exceeding it.

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. Same. I also have gone through a bunch of their tyres, and only the extralight disappointed (torn sidewall) but the standards are fantastic....

While not condoning the behaviour, this sort of response is why I am extremely reluctant to filter, and would rarely consider occupying an advanced stop box at lights. ASLs might work in London and Oxford, but elsewhere, motorists just get irate at some cheeky cyclist getting in front and in their way.
I know that even using a cycle lane to pass a line of stationary traffic can make some drivers' blood boil... and the Spectator reminds of why it is so wrong to do anything that might randomly upset a motorist, you don't want to end up a ghost bike through your own foolish choices like minding your own business rather than riding to aid drivers' psychological problems.
I wouldn't know, I've never seen one without a van sat in it.
Yeah - I don't know where the idea that they work in Oxford comes from.
I'd seen one with a bike in it there once. My mistake.
Oxford is the home of the 11" cycle lane which disappears at pinch points.
That was probably me defiantly squeezing in to the 1 foot left in front of the encroaching vehicle. And then moving off at a deliberately leisurely pace...
It's a difficult one.
On one hand road is designed to facilitate filtering up to the ASL.
But sometimes I think twice before doing so because I have no desire to have the drivers all overtake me again and again on the same stretch. But on other occasions I know that if I get past then it will remain that way
They act as a buffer / safety net when people follow the previous couple of amber gamblers but notice that another direction has started moving through the junction. Could they help a few drivers feel they've got their noses in front? Maybe that "acts as a pressure valve" and reduces road rage? On the other hand there are ASLs in Edinburgh and also people getting aggro at me from their vehicles, so maybe we just need more ASLs.
Must mention I've had one or two people tell me they really appreciate them. Maybe they'd been to Oxford and London?
I ride the same route every day so I know the traffic light timing and only filter to the ASL if I'll miss the next green, otherwise I sit in the queue in primary position.
It's totally unacceptable that I'm put off using infra designed to keep cyclists safe but sometimes I just want to get to work without risking my life and don't want to spend my whole evening making Police reports.

Yes, I reported it to West Mercia.
I don't mind saying that I've buckled / scraped a few door panels in my time for this type of behaviour. I'm sure many of us have.

Yep, reported to West Mercia. Based on previous submissions I assume they would have prosecuted this, just not very well.
Was it them or WMP who decided the guy deliberately trying to knock down the cyclist in Hagely did nothing wrong?
It was West Mercia then also. This one happened nearly a year ago and I haven't been told the outcome.
A metal tipped cycle pump is the perfect answer imo.
That fucker should've lost a rear window for putting a human life at risk.

Isn't that just standard operating procedure?
I think the braking was actually a brake test - looked to me like it was in response to a probable wave from a cyclist. I think the rider braked in response.
So, speeding and driving aggressively, with a horn blow to prove it. What an idiot.
