At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Zeosoft Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner Paste uses volcanic minerals to help get bike grime and other crud off your hands after a heavy fettling session.

We've all been there. Feeling the warm glow of cleaning, fixing or general fettling of your bike, you stand back and admire your handiwork only to realise your hands are covered in grime.

One answer is to use gloves but they are still prone to rip or tear. If you prefer to work bare-handed then you need a hand cleaner that will do the hard scrubbing for you. Zeosoft is a New Zealand company that uses natural zeolites in its range of cleaners. Zeolites are porous volcanic minerals that actively suck up and trap toxins and odours from the skin. This makes them very effective cleaners but without the skin irritation that some cleaners can produce.

You can get Zeosoft Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner in various sizes up to a 20kg tub, but the 300g tube is plenty unless you work in the trade as a mechanic. It looks like slightly runny peanut butter but with a citrus smell. I can't vouch for the taste! You apply a dollop to your wet hands and then work in to a lather. You can feel the minerals working on your skin, a bit like an exfoliation but on your hands. Once you've completed this you rinse your hands thoroughly.

The results aren't bad. Apart from one particularly grimy session, the zeolites have done their job. The added bonus is that your clean hands also smell pretty fresh.

Verdict

Despite appearances this paste can strip away grime and grease. The Zeosoft paste can get rid of those unwanted grubby marks and tell-tale signs of working on your bike and leave them with a fresh smell.

Box of Touch N Tuff powder free disposable gloves tends to prevent the problem occurring in the first place.
£11.99 for 100pairs from Arco (other safety product suppliers are available).
They're also invaluable when your out and about if you have to deal with a puncture or a chain problem.

If you are going to use hand cleaner though, use a barrier cream before you commence and a moisturiser after. All hand cleaners will strip the oils out of your skin. Industrial dermatitis is an absolute b*****d.

I use used coffee grinds mixed in the hand, with washing up liquid.
