At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Kryptonite New York 3000 isn't top of the range but is plenty tough enough to repel most criminals and is a good choice for everyday use where bike security is a necessity.

The New York features a 16mm hardened steel shackle and a disc-style cylinder with three keys supplied. The shackle locks at both ends into the base, and the lock mounts onto your bike with a metal sleeve on the shackle which slots into a resin bracket. The lock stayed put well over rough roads, and the LED key is a nice, if increasingly common, touch.

So to testing. We attacked our New York with our standard armoury: 3ft persuader, big bolt croppers, hammer, cold chisel, screwdriver and hacksaw but even before the five minutes had elapsed it was pretty obvious I wasn't going to be stealing anything: the full force of my (substantial) weight on the persuader barely elicitied a noticeable bend in the shackle. Attacks with the hammer, cold chisel and screwdriver did some cosmetic damage but the cylinder mechanism is well protected. The hacksaw might as well have been made out of cheese for all the damage it did. Nothing short of some quality power tools would make a dent in this lock.

All in all the performance was up there with the best U-locks we've tried. At £80 it's not cheap but you can have it for substantially less online, and you're certainly paying for a high level of security. The accepted wisdom is that you should spend 10-15% of the cost of your bike on a lock, so if your steed is worth over £500 then this is definitely one to consider.

Verdict

you're probably thinking of the circular key locks from years back, some of which could be picked with the end of a biro. These locks don't have that type of cylinder

Hello, my name is Angelica and in my search for the best lock for my bike I found you.
Although the post was made a couple of years I can not help commenting that although the New York U lock is strong, leave your lock and key more to be desired.
May be open to families using only a pencil. Sorry to disappoint but it's all on youtube.
I'd put 1 / 10 security

That is a fair point Vorsprung I've got one too and when I swapped it briefly for the Abus Granit X-Plus http://road.cc/content/review/1645-abus-granit-x-plus which is 300g lighter I did notice the difference.

I did mean to add something along those lines in to the review, sorry about that, but I suppose to Dave, who's a man mountain, 300g is nothing.

That said, I was still happy enough to get my New York back and it is a great lock.

Just weighed ours again and it'd definitely 1.8kg - in fact a touch under, I carry mine in my bag rather than frame mount it, but the shackle isn't that long - the whole thing measures 27cm.

I've had one of these a couple of years. It's the weight of the thing that puts me off carrying it. Your review says 1.8Kg, hmm I'd say more than that. Also it won't frame mount in any of my bikes as it is so large.

I've just bought a Kryptonite Evolution Mini, which "only" weighs 900g
