At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

These Hirzl Gripp Comfort FF gloves provide exceptional grip and just enough padding for the extra abuse of CX. The construction is top-notch and breathability is good too.

  • Pros: Fabulous grip in wet and dry conditions
  • Cons: Expensive

While full finger summer gloves aren't that common on the road, they're brilliant when it rains or if you choose to head off-road for a little cyclo-cross riding. The grip surface works brilliantly in inclement weather and it does pretty well in heavy mud too.

Hirzl uses a very similar construction to the short finger Light Mitts that I've also tested. A specially treated kangaroo leather is attached to a simple mesh. There is a nose wipe made from microfibre and an elastic wrist with no Velcro. Where the Comfort gloves differ is that they feature a small amount of padding in three key places on the palm.

Usually, I much prefer an unpadded glove but these are great for cyclo-cross and rougher roads. The padding isn't too thick and allows you a close feel of the bars.

Hirlz has built in a large pull tab on the inside of the wrist to make getting the gloves on easy. I found them easy to pull on thanks to the stretch in the mesh back. Getting them off is pretty easy too.

The fit is brilliant. Once on, the mesh has a good amount of stretch across the hand allowing a close but comfortable fit. The gloves don't stretch lengthways meaning that the gloves are secure and don't allow the hands to slip around inside the gloves.

I've been putting these through their paces in the local cross races. I've already crashed in these twice, done one mud-bath race, and swung myself around a few tight corners by holding the barriers. The gloves have withstood all of this without issue. The palms are fine and there are no tears in the mesh back. I'm really impressed.

The grip in the long fingers really helps with my braking on cantilevers that lose a lot of power in the mud. I find my hands aren't as fatigued at the end of a race and, more importantly, I feel more confident in technical and rough terrain.

One of the little benefits of a full leather palm and finger is that you can use your phone and bike computer touchscreen without removing the gloves.

In terms of value, these gloves do fall down a bit. At £44, these are significantly more expensive than most long finger gloves. But I would say that I've had a few other pairs and none come close to the Hirzl in terms of performance, especially in the wet. Endura's Hummvee Lite Gloves (£19.99) are ones I've used; they offer similar breathability but are nowhere near the grip of the Hirlz gloves.

Despite the cost, I'd highly recommend these, especially if you ride in poor conditions or plan to head into the mud of cyclo-cross.

Verdict

Expensive but worth it for the grip they provide in the wet

Very nicely made. The stitching is strong and none of the mesh has pulled. That's good considering the treatment that these have had.

Rate the product for performance:

10/10

These give grip that is so good it gave me more confidence and less fatigue while braking heavily.

Rate the product for durability:

9/10

I've crashed in these twice now. I didn't mean to, but it's a good sign that the gloves have been unfazed.

Rate the product for fit:

9/10

The fingers were long enough and the stretch in the material gave a close fit, allowing a good feel of the levers.

Rate the product for sizing:

The mesh back has loads of stretch so they provide a nicely snug fit.

Rate the product for weight:

Rate the product for comfort:

The comfort is great. The palm is soft and has a little padding that works very well.

Rate the product for value:

6/10

The performance is high but so is the price. You do get a great pair of gloves, though, so I'd say that it's good.

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

They've stayed fresh and there's no sign of wear to the leather palm.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Very well. Great grip, very comfortable and they breathe well too.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

The grip in the worst conditions gives me more confidence in technical and heavy braking areas of the cyclo-cross course.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

The price. If you managed to wreck the gloves in a crash on tarmac, then you'd be looking at an expensive replacement.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

It is high, double the price of some. But if you need the grip then you won't be disappointed with what you get for your cash.

Did you enjoy using the product? Loved using these.

Would you consider buying the product? Yes. I want the thermal version for the colder races.

Would you recommend the product to a friend? Yep, anyone riding cyclo-cross.

Use this box to explain your overall score

Brilliant performance and fit but the price is pretty high, especially if you don't need the extra grip.

Overall rating: 8/10

Ktache, these feature the mesh back so they stay pretty cool, just not as cool as the short finger. They also do these with no padding which personally, I prefer.

Tbh, after reviewing these, I'm looking at their winter gloves as I always struggle with chilly tips on cafe rides and Sunday spins.

Spofferoonie, How are the mesh backed no padded ones, this kangeroo leather sounds good, how does it compare to pittards?

Have to admit, I've pretty much got the entire Hirzl range (although they aren't my favourite mitt, I like all the others so much I thought it was worth a punt). These are for cooler spring and autumn days and work an absolute treat (I've got two pairs now). The winter gloves are also well worth a look (they're a layering system but I've never put the inners or crab fingers on if I'm being honest). Well made gloves that work really well (and which are often on special at Sport Pursuit).
