Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.
Thirty quid helmets tend to have a few compromises over their more expensive, pro replica cousins. Fewer vents, more weight, basic adjustment systems are just some of the sacrifices usually made but GT's Corsa helmet kind of turns this trend on its head.
The EPS inner, co-moulded to a polycarbonate shell allows for 22 large vents which keep temperatures down even when climbing in 20+°C heat. The skeletal rib structure that's left provides an aggressive, edgy style which is finished off by those extended points at the back.
The Corsa is available in two sizes, large (58-62cm) and the medium (52-58cm) that we've got on test. Its weight is a none too shabby 295g though it does feel lighter than that in use.
For retention a simple ratchet system is used and while it does feel a little flimsy it does the job and small tweaks on the fly are easy. The cradle tightens or loosens around the base of your head at the rear while standard straps keep the rest of the helmet in place.
Comfort is high on the agenda to thanks to some decent padding. It's thicker than a lot of others I've used but doesn't ruck or squash once the helmet is secured in place.
The only standard its tested to is EN 1078 which is the basic requirement for helmets to be sold in Europe with regards to impact testing, retention and so on.
The model we've got here is en vogue for 2013/14 in matt black with yellow highlights. I think it looks pretty good but the large GT branding may not be to everybody's taste. For those of you who want something a little more reserved it does also come in a silver/white combo.
On the whole the Corsa puts a lot of the more expensive brands to shame when taking looks, comfort and fit into account. As I said above the retention system feels a little cheap and not quite as precise as others but on a helmet costing just £29.99 it's more than acceptable.
The overall finish is good with no rough edges or threads on the straps. The shell covers the majority of the EPS which will keep it protected from small falls and drops and add to the longevity.
Top looks, top performance and all for a bargain basement price.
