Paris-Roubaix might have been a few days ago now but here’s the Pinarello Dogma K8-S that Team Sky’s Ian Stannard raced to third place. We got the chance to see it at Sky’s Service Course (the team’s logistics HQ) in Belgium yesterday, complete with authentic Paris-Roubaix mud!
The key feature of the K8-S is the DSS 1.0 (Dogma Suspension System), a shock between the seatstays and the seat tube with travel that relies on flex in the chainstays.
Check out or Pinarello Dogma K8-S First Ride from last year.
Team Sky asked Pinarello to develop this model specifically for the cobbles. The rear brake is direct mount although the front one is a standard centre-mount design.
You can see the result of all the chain slap on the flattened driveside chainstay.
A sticker on the top tube gives the point in the race and the length of each section of cobbles.
The bike is fitted with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 electronic groupset with satellite shifters fixed to the drops to provide extra gear changing options.
Stannard rode Paris-Roubaix with a 53-tooth outer chainring and a 44-tooth inner ring. There are no steep hills on the course so smaller gears aren’t needed.
Team Sky riders use Stages power metres and Stannard uses 175mm cranks.
The wheels are Shimano Dura-Ace C50s, the 50 referring to the rim depth in millimetres, fitted with 27mm-wide FMB Paris Roubaix tubulars. These are incredibly popular among the pro teams for the cobbled Classics. Team Sky buy them a year in advance just to make sure they get the number they need.
Fizik has made Arione saddles with extra padding for some riders, including Ian Stannard.
The handlebar and stem are both aluminium.
