Local cycling advocate, Amanda Phillipson is giving an inspiring talk at the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative store in Rusholme this June as part of an ongoing series featuring local ambassadors of the sport.

Amanda is well known locally for her achievements, including becoming the first female captain of South Manchester’s Withington Wheelers. Amanda is also a qualified SkyRide leader, cycling instructor and a proud Breeze Champion. Breeze organises fun and local rides all over the UK making it the UK’s biggest programme ever to get women into cycling.

On Wednesday 10th June at 7:30pm, Phillipson will discuss the history of the Withington Wheelers and the rise of women in cycling. As well as this, she will talk about her cycling achievements over the past 11 years, including being a part of SkyRide and Breeze. Amanda will then host a Q&A session.

Amanda has always taken an active role in the cycling community and delights in dispelling the myth that cycling clubs are not welcoming to women.

The event will take place at the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative Rusholme store. Free tickets can be booked via http://bit.ly/MancSeries

Manager at the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative Rusholme store, Alex Amato, commented: “It’s great to have a female ambassador of cycling coming along to the store to do a talk as part of the Manchester Series, as we feel it’s important for women to know they are more than welcome in the sport and can take up leadership positions within it. Amanda is a local girl and is well known on the Manchester cycling scene, so it will be especially interesting to get the regional take on it – which will no doubt be useful for ladies in the area who are already involved in, or are perhaps thinking about taking up, the sport.”

Amanda Phillipson added: “I’m delighted to have been invited to do a talk at the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative. I want women of all ages to feel comfortable enough to get on a bike and enjoy cycling, whether that be for exercise, for fun or as part of a cycling group. Women in sport don’t get enough exposure, and often don’t feel welcomed enough, so I’m on a mission to inspire female cyclists in Manchester. This talk is the next step to help me achieve this”.

This summer, the Rusholme store will also play host to multi-medal winning track cyclist Matt Crampton (w/c 22/06), and Twisted Spokes cycling lawyer Jane Bedford-Mclaren (01/07), as part of its Manchester Series.
