Teen cyclist left bloodied and bruised by school run motorist who drove off

Taron Stead's mother releases picture of son's injuries in hope driver will come forward...

The mother of a Sheffield teenager has released a picture of his bloodied face after he was knocked off his bike last week, in a bid to track down the motorist involved, who left the scene without leaving their details.

Apprentice IT engineer Taron Stead was riding his bike to work last Friday when he was involved in a collision with a car, reports the Sheffield Star, which has published a picture of the teenager showing bruising and abrasions to his face.

Naomi Pickard, the 17-year-old’s mother, told the newspaper: Taron said the woman in the car got out looked over at him, told him she had children in the car who were upset and she didn’t want them to be late for school, then the car drove off.”

The male driver of the car did not swap details with the teenager before leaving the scene, and he was looked after by staff at Sheffield University’s nearby law school while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

“I can’t believe anyone would leave an injured child at the side of the road after a crash, but it was rush hour and it would have been busy so I am hoping that witnesses come forward and help the police trace the driver,” continued Ms Pickard, who said, “there is CCTV in the area too.”

On her Facebook page, she described the driver of the car as “male, white, bald with a goatee beard and glasses.”

Taron had bought his bike just three weeks earlier from his first wages, and staff at the store who heard about what had happened have said they will repair it without charge.

“We want to thank Halfords for their gesture and also the university staff who looked after Taron and gave him first aid until the paramedics arrived,” said Ms Pickard. “I am grateful that they stayed with him.”

She added: “I hope the driver and his passenger who drove off see Taron’s injuries and think about their actions. Fortunately he was wearing a helmet, or I dread to think what might have happened.”

South Yorkshire Police have appealed for information, with a spokeswoman describing the vehicle involved as “a silver Ford, either a Focus or Mondeo,” and asking anyone with information to contact them on 101.

I work in a postcode where young drivers "insure" their vehicle with false names and address so that the police PNR computer doesn't zap their registration, and to get a cheap premium, so if they knock over innocent cyclists causing injury then buggering off they have a very slim chance of getting caught the bastards.

So why don't insurance companies require proof of id and address ?

What a morally-bankrupt, cesspit of pigshit family that must be. If the law doesn't catchup with them I hope karma does.

Nice one Halfords.

Well done Halfords, just a few quid there are great publicity as a result of doing the right thing.

I would camp out and identify the arsehole, an incident/ accident / whatever is one thing, driving away is quite another.

For all that it's just a straight through road with a series of adjoining roads, it's a pretty bad junction. Drivers are often either selfish and arrogant or erratic and unpredictable. It's on a hill so easy to go fast on a bike and I've had a few near misses there.

Nice PR for Halfords

I'm guessing the real reason they drove off is because they're unlicensed and uninsured.

In legal terms this is really quite serious. leaving the scene of an accident, especially when someone is injured is quite a big deal.

Not sure that presumed liability would help. I'm in favour of presumed liability but if anything it might make drivers like this one more likely to make a swift exit in such situations. I'm always led to wonder the insurance status of drivers who do this sort of thing too.

And yet it happens a lot. People see that you are up and moving, and not dead, and then shrug and carry on with their lives. Probably don't even think about it enough for them to be considered malicious - just pig ignorant.

More proof, if it was needed, that humans just become absolute fools once they sit behind the wheel of a car. We are achingly polite normally, people even say sorry when they get out of a lift sometimes, but get in a car and we just lose it.

Punishment should fit the crime. 3 month driving ban and make them do the school run on a bike.

I guarantee there is no other resolution that would make them understand their actions and stop them doing it again.

Leaving the scene of an accident needs much, much harsher punishement than a three month driving ban.

I always felt the school run was a selfish act and never more so than in this case.

But of course you know the main reason the vast majority of parents drive their kids to school (unlike the Netherlands). Because it's not safe to let them make their own way through all the dangerous traffic. 102

Nasty incident, a bloke at work this week was involved in a hit and run on Dewsbury road.

imho until we have presumed liability and stricter road laws this will keep happening, as a none driver who coups ok with not driving I don't understand why driving licences are not revoked for life but as a none driver that easy for me to say, I am not addicted to four wheels.

The selfish attitude of some people will never cease to amaze me. Look at the kids face it is messed up and would most likely look a lot worse at the time it happened, and they drive off!!! I don't understand that, it really makes me very sad, not even angry just sad...i'm sure I would however be angry if it was me or mine that were hit

Nasty Sad Given it was rush hour, I wonder if he was filtering past stationary traffic and someone flashed someone to turn right/cross the junction in front of them without checking their mirrors? Sad

Not really relevant when the scummers stopped and looked at the poor lad then drove off.
Let's hope they get what they deserve.

Hope he recovers quickly and they catch the selfish little wotsits and prosecute them for leaving the scene. Wonder how they'd feel if someone else did that to their kids? 2

Nice gesture from Halfords - I don't often have good things to say about them, but I don't know many shops round my area that would do that.
