Cavendish included in Great Britain’s World Championships team despite crashing out of Tour of Britain

Strong classics team assembled for the road race

Mark Cavendish is expected to be fit to race as part of Great Britain’s team for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships despite crashing out of the Tour of Britain yesterday. The Etixx-Quick Step rider is one of a strong group of classics riders who will compete in Richmond in the United States.

Cavendish crashed out of the Tour of Britain after colliding with a parked car at the top of Gun Hill on stage six. However, he later tweeted:

He joins no fewer than five Team Sky riders in the British team – Ben Swift, Ian Stannard, Geraint Thomas, Andy Fenn and Luke Rowe. The team also includes Alex Dowsett of Movistar and two riders from outside of the WorldTour – MTN-Qhubeka’s Steve Cummings and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Scott Thwaites of Bora-Argon 18.

Dowsett will also compete in the time trial, while Lizzie Armistead, who recently became UCI Women’s World Cup champion for the second year in a row, will lead the women’s team.

Great Britain Cycling Team coach co-ordinator, Iain Dyer, said:

“We’ve selected a really exciting team of riders to contest this year’s road world championships. We have high hopes for a number of riders in terms of medal prospects but it will also be a fantastic opportunity for some of the younger and less experienced members of the team to compete at an international event for the first time.”

interested to see who will take Cav and G's places in the team now! Blythe and the Yates pair were on the long list, but the twins/one of them said it wasn't really a course for them when they weren't selected for the original nine... Will that affect anything?
Or is it too late to add replacements?

PS I'm hoping for dire weather at Richmond so Stannard/Rowe/Thomas can smash it!

Agreed, he recovered from the Tour in time for ToB. Britain's best rider at the last worlds, he targeted Richmond from way back :

Admittedly Kennaugh had team support at the nationals, Cav rode a great race for his silver - still given the worlds parcour it just suits Kennaugh better. If there are questions over his fitness and form, you can ask the same about Cav. It was illness not injury that took him out of the Tour, I thought he'd be targeting this with fresh legs, using ToB for race fitness.

I don't get it.

No Pete Kennaugh though? Is there something I don't know, because that seems a real omission.

Incidentally, you can get odds of 50/1 for a Geraint Thomas rainbow jersey.
