Cyclist rides into Pendolino train YouTube still.JPGVideo: Cyclist crashes into 140kph train - and escapes with bruises
A cyclist who rode into the side of a Pendolino train travelling at 140 kilometres an hour astonishingly escaped with nothing more than bruises.
The incident took place in Opole, Poland, last month, reports TVN24.pl.
CCTV footage showing the dramatic incident from both sides of the railway line was posted to YouTube earlier this week and has been viewed more than a million times.
The cyclist, a 26-year-old male, was reportedly fined for reckless cycling.
A picture posted to Facebook shows the damage caused to the train, which was delayed for 40 minutes before continuing its journey.

The truth is than in the Netherlands that I saw them, they were indeed a bit huge for cycle infra. However they were rather rare.

I can't help feling that the fine for careless cycling is a bit superfluous?
Compelling evidence, if ever I saw it, for covering the outside of motor vehicles with a soft, energy-absorbing layer. We could call them "motor helmets".

Sorry to say but the more lycra a person wears the more invinicible they believe they are, lucky for him he survived his stupidity :p
Pretty conclusive proof of risk compensation, I'd say. Would he have done that if he hadn't been wearing a helmet?
Cyclist (Getting up and looking around, flapping arms up and down in exasperated gesture, rummaging for phone): "Whoa!! Stupid train! Stupid Driver! Who goes through a crossing at 140KPH?"
Train Driver: "Sorry Mate I didn't see you, and the barriers were down the lights were red, the horn went, I wasn't expecting you to try and go over..."
Cyclist (distractedly fumbling with bike computer, unplugging headphones, trying to stop deafening music with phone...)."I had right of way!"
Train driver: "What?!? And you've got no Hi-Viz on, or lights.."
Cyclist (distractedly taking selfie of damage and uploading to social media, whilst tweeting #stupidtraindrivers...):" You should watch where you're going!"
Train Driver:" What?!?"
Cyclist (distractedly checking cycle computer / phone app has paused so as not to ruin strava times etc....) "BUT I RANG MY BELL!!! That's it! I am posting disguested rants all over the Twitterverse now in order to start multiple arguments and debates concerning road safety and cyclists Vs 'the world' and to whinge about how cyclists who ride along with shades on all the time, blaring music in their headhpones all the time and one eye on their cycle computer all the time (and who get really annoyed if they have to slow or stop for anything at all) are being victimised by everyone . Train certainly not doing 140Km/h - I'll bet he had headphones on, absolutely no reaction to the approaching train, you do wonder about some cyclists actually being aware of anything happening on their journey.
On a section of track with level crossings I'd be surprised if the rail speed limit was 100km/hr, more likely 80km/hr , although I've got NFI of Poland's rail regs. So yes, it is a "140km/hr train" that he hit (ie a train that can go 140km/hr), but I'd be very surprised if it was going that fast.
E.g. Germany does allow level crossing on tracks up to a speed of 160 km/h. any track with a higher speed limit e.g. 200 km/h requires tunnels or bridges. ( Anything above 200 km/h exceeds the limit of regular coaches and requires express trains like ICE/thalys/TGV) Local trains with a speed limit of 120/140 km/h will go at a speed close to max on long straights. So better watch out!

If, and I say if you were thinking of taking the risk of going over that crossing, would you not be going slow enough to stop, on the very slight chance there could be a train coming, given that the barriers are down?
Ouch! He doesn't qualify for a Darwin award because he never removed himself from the gene pool, but he certainly deserves an honorary mention.
Some would say, "#bloodycyclists", and just maybe, in this example, they could be right.
