broken bike.jpgLorry driver charged following death of cyclist in Selhurst crash
A lorry driver has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of a collision following the death of cyclist Magda Tadaj in Croydon. Darren Anderton is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates Court on December 20.
Anderton was arrested after Tadaj was hit by a lorry in St James's Road near The Windmill pub in Selhurst on May 23. Despite the efforts of passers-by, the 25-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following her death, Croydon Council held an urgent meeting and has been assessing the safety of St James's Road.
John Vinsan, a staff member at SR1 Food and Wine below Tadaj's flat in Northborough Road, told the Croydon Advertiser that she had worked at Caffe Nero.
"She used to leave her bike outside the shop and come and get some Polish biscuits sometimes. She was very shy but used to tell me about her work. She used to cycle there."

Less harmful citrus degreaser is easy to find at £8 or less for 5 litres. Works ok for me, even diluted up to 4:1. Both paraffin and white spirit...

Nope, it's to keep your straps down and quieter. Plus most sunglasses are polycarbonate and aren't going to shatter like glass anyway

I know that area well adn the road network is not well suited to cycling. Some design changes could make it a great deal safer. I don't often cycle that way but do pass through on my motorbike soemtimes and even on the motorbike, that area is poor.
We need a radical change to the law so it's more a case of manslaughter if you cannot demonstrate a clear reason why you did NOT avoid the other road user when operating a dangerous machine such as a car or lorry.
Yet another case of obvious hazard which nothing is done about until someone dies. We need a radical reform how of road risk is assessed, including road safety audits which are frankly useless for cyclists.
Another one less than a mile from where I lived for fourteen year. Like the way Croydon Council had an 'urgent meeting' to discuss the safety of St James' Road - there's nothing wrong with the road, it's the absolute arsemuppets who live there.

You can't ban him - he needs to drive. It's obviously impossible for him to do something else.

Seriously ? A girl died and a man has suffered daily and will continue to suffer for the rest of his life due to no fault of his own! Fortuantley he is an intelligent and well qualified individual with other career options that he can hopefully take up in the future. Apologies if that doesn't fit your driver stereotype.

That sort of smart sarcasm diminishes the tragedy that has occurred here. The poor driver will feel anguished about this for the rest of his life. No amount of money can help him recover from this. And think of his family and friends and all the motons reading this: they will feel too terrified to go out for a cycle now.

Why only failing to stop? Whaat about careless/dangerous driving? Did he not realise he had hit someone?
He wasn't charged with careless driving as CCTV showed the cyclist pulled behind the truck to overtake on outside, was unable to do so and cut back in behind the truck to rejoin the cycle lane at the point where it ended causing the bike to wobble and go under the back wheels. There was nothing the driver could do and he did initially stop, the full details will come out in court. Meanwhile, a girl has lost her life and a driver has had his life torn apart through no fault of his own.
