Environmental groups have expressed disappointment with the Scottish Government's latest climate change strategy, arguing that it "largely ignores" the need to promote walking, cycling or public transport.
Herald Scotland reports that Transform Scotland has criticised the draft climate change plan in its evidence to the two parliamentary committees tasked with scrutinising it.
Cycling can contribute more to global warming than driving, argues Harvard researcher
Director Colin Howden said: "Once again, the proposals have largely ignored the need to get people out of cars and start walking, cycling or taking public transport. The focus on vehicle technology means that few if any benefits will be felt for equalities, public health, congestion or the economy.”
He added: "The Scottish Government has many other policies in place for promoting these healthiest modes of transport, so it is strange that they are largely ignored in the climate change plan."
Scotland currently has a target of 10 per cent of journeys being made by bike by 2020 and while the Scottish Government has committed to record levels of active travel investment, this is set to remain at £39m a year until 2021.
Last month Cycling UK said that this level of funding was insufficient for the government to hit its target.

To be fair, this isn't just Scotland, it's UK wide. Most local authorities recognise the contribution of cycling to pollution, congestion, global warming and health, on paper at least. The government, if it can be called that, has the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, so ably described by CUK as little investment and even less strategy. Health and environmental experts recognise cycling as massively beneficial. But none of these are converted to action on the ground.
There is something fundamentally wrong with our society when everyone recognises the value of cycling, but nothing is done. I've stood twice as a Green Party candidate in my local elections, with the specific aim of getting the council to implement the policies it has had for the past twenty years, and I'll be standing again next time, and hopefully winning this time. The only way things are going to change is if we get the current dinosaurs out and elect some cyclists.

Believe it or not, there's a strong cycle culture in Scotland and I'm sure most people who read this website would like to see it recognised by the powers that (partially) govern Scotland. In this respect, the trolling is not only unoriginal, but unhelpful.
Has anybody been on the relatively new M74? The road was built to help ease congestion around Glasgow, but only underlines the need to back up those who cycle in this city.
