Near Miss of the Day 198: The invisible cyclist

Our regular feature highlighting close passes caught on camera from around the country

Videos showing motorists who fail to see cyclists feature regularly in our Near Miss of the Day series and today is no exception.

This one, which shows the driver of a Mini overtaking a parked Tesco delivery van, happened to road.cc reader Rodney, who told us: "When I was a child to be invisible sounded like a great super power to have!

"Riding my bike some 35 years later it seams to have come true! twice in a space of a few miles!"

We show the first of the videos Rodeney submitted above - the second shows a motorist pulling out asw though he simply isn't there.

Rodney added: "Not a good super power to have on the road even with a 600 lumens flashing light!"

> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?

Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.

If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.

If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).

Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

> What to do if you capture a near miss or close pass (or worse) on camera while cycling

Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Don't think the cylist did anything wrong.

The mini driver was just being a selfish cnut.

This is a regular occurence on narrow roads and lanes - the number of times I've had to brake hard 'cos some knob pulls onto my side of the road to pass a parked car, both on a bike and in my car.

I was expecting the 3 cars behind to be glued to the Mini's bumper!   Not a biggie this one for me, sorry.

I reckon after first seeing a cyclist and before 'committing' drivers make a series of incorrect assumptions and judgments.  Rather than simply telling themselves, 'cyclist...I must wait', it's 'cyclist -  I kind of have priority anyway, they're slow, not very wide, I can make this overtake... ooops, that was close'.   Of course there's always plenty of room for 'cyclist - whatever!'.

I suspect its alot more simpler than that, its  "oh a cyclist...theyll get out of my way"

I’d have overdramaticly slammed the brakes on and given the mini the palm up “what the hell” gesture personally, but that is easy to say seeing a video.

I’d have slowed down so I didn’t lose my balance making “wanker” type gestures.

Difficult to judge this one other than to say that if I'd been the cyclist I'd have backed my speed off a bit to avoid a needlessly uncomfortable pass. Or was Rodney just trying to make point?

Some drivers are assholes whether there's a car, cyclist or pedestrian coming their way.

Some cyclists and pedestrians are assholes too.

Hmm, I think I'd have stopped once I realised the Mini driver was committed

Mini had more than enough time to stop, just decided not to.

Not really marginal, Mini committed well after cyclist was visible. Probably just misjudged the speed rather than pure naked cycle hating kill vision.

Easy enough to avoid by cyclist aware of hazards on the road ahead, and avoided. Though personally I'd have braked, or at least stopped pedalling, and left a bit more room.

Mini driver had time to stop. He was way back on the van as the cyclist came round the bend.

Looks like the driver had already committed to a pass before the cyclist came round the bend.
Although good job it wasn't a car instead.
Was expecting the driver behind the mini to pile through too.

Not sure what video you were watching but in the one I saw the mini driver had definitely not committed and could easily has prevented that dangerous manouvre.
