Tributes to Wisbech Wheelers CC stalwart who died three weeks after collision

Paul Simms "“will be sorely missed by the whole local cycling and racing community" says Cambridgeshire club...

Tributes have been paid to a long-term member of Wisbech Wheelers Cycling Club who has died in hospital from injuries sustained in a collision involving a car while he was out cycling last month.

Paul Simms, aged 68, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge after the collision involving a Vauxhall Astra at Roman Bank, Leverington, on 23 April.

Mr Simms, from Wisbech St Mary, spent three weeks in a coma but passed away on Tuesday 14 May, reports the Fenland Citizen.

Wisbech Wheelers Cycling Club described him as “one of the best sprinters and finishers in the club.

“He also organised his own squad of veterans as well as many trips home and abroad for members.

“He will be sorely missed by the whole local cycling and racing community and our deepest sympathy goes to his family at this time."

In a statement, his family said: “Paul was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed.”

Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed that no arrests had been made but their investigation continues and they have appealed for witnesses to get in touch on 101.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Sad news, seen him around a few times.

Government really needs to come out and change the attitude towards road cycling!

Paul was a very good friend of mine and riding partner. Only knew him for the 4 years since I joined Wisbech Wheelers but he was always the first to help a rider in need.

The whole club enjoyed his company on a ride and in the pub afterwards!

He will be sorely missed.
